Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have a local, unpruned copy of a supported chain and want to extract or summarize its stored block data from the command line.
Who it is for
- Developers building local blockchain data extraction pipelines.
- Researchers or analysts who need CSV records, address balances, UTXOs or chain statistics.
- Rust developers adapting the parser or its callbacks for tailored extraction.
Documented uses
- Export balances for addresses with non-zero balances to CSV.
- Dump unspent transaction outputs with associated address balances.
- Export block, transaction, input and output data as CSV for subsequent analysis or database import.
- Inspect valid UTF-8 OP_RETURN contents and calculate basic blockchain statistics.
- Extend callbacks or customize the parser for a coin.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under GPL-3.0. The README identifies GitHub as its official source for releases and describes builds for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Requires an unpruned local blockchain copy with an intact block index and block files; Bitcoin Core 0.15.1 or a similar client is specified.
- Available chain options include Bitcoin, Testnet, Namecoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Myriadcoin, Unobtanium and NoteBlockchain.
- The README estimates around 18 GB of memory for balance and UTXO extraction, versus about 100 MB for statistics and full CSV parsing; figures are tied to a historical block height.
- The README says a full CSV dump can reach at least 731 GiB at its cited historical height; a UTXO dump can reach at least 8 GiB.
- Bitcoin and Bitcoin Testnet transaction parsing and the custom script handling for Bitcoin forks have different documented transaction-type coverage.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Rusty Blockparser from source
Prepare the command-line program from the GitHub repository.
Before you start
- Rust and Cargo
- A clone of the official repository
Steps
Clone https://github.com/gcarq/rusty-blockparser.git.
Change into the rusty-blockparser directory.
Build the release version with cargo build --release.
Run cargo test and then ./target/release/rusty-blockparser --help as listed in the README.
Expected outcome
A release build and the command-line help output, following the repository's documented setup sequence.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers building and displaying help, not parsing a blockchain.
- The README says release mode is essential for performance and reports testing on Gentoo Linux with rust-stable 1.85.0.
