Practical overview
When it fits
Use Runpod when an AI workload needs cloud GPU compute, and select an instance, serverless endpoint or multi-node cluster according to the workload pattern.
Who it is for
- Teams and developers running AI workloads that need cloud GPU compute.
- Users serving AI inference through API-based serverless GPU endpoints.
- Teams running distributed workloads across multi-node GPU clusters.
Documented uses
- Run model inference through serverless GPU endpoints.
- Train or fine-tune AI models using cloud GPUs.
- Run distributed GPU workloads on multi-node clusters.
- Process batch workloads on GPU infrastructure.
Requirements & limits
Runpod is a paid service. The official site describes API-based AI workloads.
- Choose the service pattern based on whether the task is inference, training or fine-tuning, batch processing, or distributed multi-node work.
- Review the pricing for the relevant GPU workload before selecting a service pattern.
- The available information does not specify API operations, configuration steps or supported frameworks.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Call a Runpod public model endpoint with Python
Submit an image-generation request to the documented public FLUX model endpoint and read its image URL.
Before you start
- A Runpod API key.
- Python with the
requestspackage. - The documented public model endpoint.
Steps
Create a Runpod API key.
Send a POST request to
https://api.runpod.ai/v2/black-forest-labs-flux-1-schnell/runsyncwith a Bearer authorization header and JSON content type.Provide an
inputobject containing a prompt and image dimensions, such aswidthandheight.Read the response JSON and access
output.image_url.
Expected outcome
The example reads an image URL from the endpoint response.
Guide limitations
- The example documents this specific public model endpoint; it does not establish behavior for other models.
- No result or successful test is reported.
Create a network volume for a Runpod Pod
Create persistent storage and attach it when deploying a Pod.
Before you start
- A Runpod account with access to the web console.
- A network volume in a location compatible with the desired GPU; available GPU options depend on volume location.
Steps
In the console, open Storage and select New Network Volume.
Choose a data center, enter a name and size in GB, select a storage tier, and create the volume.
Open Pods and select Deploy, then choose Network Volume and select the volume.
Choose a GPU type, configure the template and other settings, and select Deploy On-Demand.
Expected outcome
A Pod is deployed with the selected network volume, which replaces its default volume disk and is typically mounted at `/workspace`.
Guide limitations
- Network volumes for Pods are available only in the Secure Cloud.
- The volume must be attached during Pod deployment; it cannot later be attached or detached without deleting the Pod.
- Volume size can be increased but not decreased; volumes over 4 TB require contacting support.
- Storage charges continue while a Pod is stopped, and an unpaid volume may eventually be terminated with data unrecoverable.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runpod | Run model inference through serverless GPU endpoints. | Cloud, Web | Runpod is a paid service. The official site describes API-based AI workloads. |
| Morphingdb | Import a libtorch model and create predictions from values in a PostgreSQL table. | Docker, Linux, Self-hosted, Server | The README documents a Docker image and a build-from-repository option, followed by connecting to PostgreSQL and enabling the pgdl extension. |
| Gateway — pyadav | Send chat-completion requests to a provider through a common server endpoint. | Server | The repository is public and identifies the project as Apache-2.0 licensed. README installation instructions include binaries, platform package managers and Docker. |
