rpi

rpi is a Rust coding-agent runtime offered as a library and terminal CLI. It connects LLM providers with tools, sessions and a plugin interface, letting developers run an agent in the terminal, embed one in a Rust application, or build extensions.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use rpi when you want a Rust-based agent runtime that can serve both as a terminal CLI and as an embeddable library, with tools and plugin support shared across those modes.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want a terminal-based coding agent.
  • Rust developers building an agent into their own application.
  • Plugin authors extending tools or providers across rpi sessions.

Documented uses

  • Run an interactive or one-shot coding-agent prompt from a terminal.
  • Embed an agent runtime in a Rust process and handle its events.
  • Configure Anthropic or OpenAI-compatible providers, including a custom gateway.
  • Preserve agent sessions as JSONL and resume from the last committed frame after a crash.
  • Build tools for an embedded agent and package them as CLI-loaded plugins.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The README documents prebuilt-binary, Cargo, package-manager and source installation routes; Cargo installation requires Rust 1.78 or later.

  • The project supports both a ready-to-run CLI and an embeddable Rust library.
  • The documented provider options include Anthropic, OpenAI and OpenAI-compatible gateways.
  • A faux provider supports deterministic SDK examples without an API key or network connection.
  • CLI sessions use JSONL storage and are described as crash-resumable.
  • The prebuilt binary installer is documented as avoiding the need for a Rust toolchain; Cargo installation requires Rust 1.78 or later.

Source-based practical guide

Install rpi from crates.io

Install the rpi terminal CLI using Cargo.

Before you start

  • Rust 1.78 or later.

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo install rpi-cli
  2. Run rpi --version to display the installed CLI version.

Expected outcome

The rpi CLI is installed through Cargo and its version can be displayed.

Guide limitations

  • This installation route requires Rust 1.78 or later.
Source-based practical guide

Start an interactive rpi session

Launch the terminal agent using a configured provider.

Before you start

  • An Anthropic or OpenAI API key, or provider configuration in ~/.rpi/agent/models.json.

Steps

  1. Set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or OPENAI_API_KEY, or configure a provider in ~/.rpi/agent/models.json.

  2. Run rpi to open the interactive terminal interface.

Expected outcome

The terminal agent opens with the configured provider.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents Anthropic and OpenAI-compatible providers; provider-specific model access depends on the chosen configuration.
