Practical overview
When it fits
Use Rankify when you need a Python-based way to explore retrieval and reranking choices or connect those stages to a RAG pipeline.
Who it is for
- Developers prototyping document-grounded question-answering systems.
- Researchers or engineering teams comparing retrieval and reranking methods.
- Python users assembling modular retrieval-augmented generation workflows.
Documented uses
- Retrieve documents for a search query.
- Rerank retrieved documents to adjust their ordering.
- Create a RAG workflow that retrieves, reranks and generates an answer.
- Compare approaches using the toolkit's benchmark datasets.
Requirements & limits
The project is a public, open-source GitHub repository. The README documents pip installation and requires Python 3.10 or later.
- The pipeline interface offers separate search, rerank and RAG modes.
- Optional dependency groups let users install retrieval, reranking or RAG components separately, or select all dependencies.
- PyTorch 2.5.1 is recommended; GPU-enabled PyTorch with CUDA 12.4 or 12.6 is suggested for GPU use.
- ColBERT setup has additional compiler, library and environment-variable requirements.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Rankify with all components
Prepare a Python environment with Rankify's retrieval, reranking and RAG dependencies.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- Conda is used in the documented environment setup
- PyTorch 2.5.1 is recommended
Steps
Create and activate a Conda environment with Python 3.10.
Install PyTorch 2.5.1 using the platform-specific instructions referenced by the project.
Install Rankify and its full dependency set with pip install "rankify[all]".
Expected outcome
A Rankify installation with dependencies for retrieval, reranking and RAG.
Guide limitations
- The project recommends CUDA 12.4 or 12.6 PyTorch for GPU use; GPU access is not described as required.
- ColBERT requires additional compiler, library and environment-variable setup.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
