Rails Audit Skill (thoughtbot Best Practices)

Rails Audit Skill (thoughtbot Best Practices) is an MIT-licensed Claude Code skill that audits Ruby on Rails applications against thoughtbot’s Ruby Science and Testing Rails practices. Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want Claude Code to review a Rails application or a selected area against thoughtbot-informed practices, with optional tool-measured coverage or code-quality data.

Who it is for

  • Ruby on Rails developers reviewing application design and maintainability.
  • Teams looking for a focused audit of Rails testing practices or specific areas such as controllers.
  • Developers who want optional test-coverage or code-quality measurements included in an audit.

Documented uses

  • Review Rails code against established Ruby and Rails guidance.
  • Identify testing-practice concerns and test-coverage gaps.
  • Inspect design choices, database practices, external-service handling, and performance antipatterns.
  • Target an audit to selected files or directories.
  • Add optional SimpleCov coverage or RubyCritic quality measurements to the report.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and states that the skill is available under the MIT License.

  • It is a Claude Code skill, not a separately exposed audit API.
  • The README documents both full-application and targeted audit invocation.
  • SimpleCov and RubyCritic collection is optional and prompts before installation or execution; when absent from the Gemfile, the workflow temporarily adds the relevant gem and describes restoring the Gemfile and cleaning
  • The audit’s reference materials include checklists and guidance, while the two optional tools provide measured coverage and code-quality data.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Request a full or targeted Rails audit

Invoke the skill to review a Rails application or a selected area of it.

Before you start

  • The installed skill
  • A Rails project, with the terminal in its root directory for the documented terminal invocation, or an active Claude session

Steps

  1. From a terminal at the Rails project root, invoke claude audit for a full application audit; or, in a Claude session, reference /rails-audit-thoughtbot.

  2. For a focused review in a Claude session, use /rails-audit-thoughtbot audit controllers, substituting the requested files or directory.

Expected outcome

The requested full or targeted audit is invoked using the documented usage pattern.

Guide limitations

  • The README’s terminal instruction is specifically for use outside a Claude session and requires the Rails project root. Optional SimpleCov and RubyCritic data collection is separate and opt-in.
