Practical overview
When it fits
Use RagDocs when you want to run a documentation-focused RAG interface yourself and connect it to local language models through Ollama.
Who it is for
- Developers who need to search technical documentation conversationally.
- Teams building a self-hosted question-answering interface for product or internal documentation.
Documented uses
- Ask questions about a documentation collection and receive answers grounded in retrieved content.
- Search and explore multiple documentation sets through a chat interface.
- Compare technology stacks using the documented comparison feature.
- Refresh documentation collections as content changes using the project’s incremental-update capability.
Requirements & limits
- The documented stack includes a FastAPI backend, Next.js frontend, Milvus vector search and Ollama for local models.
- Setup requires Python 3.12+, Node.js 20.17.0, Milvus 2.0+ and, for local LLM support, Ollama.
- The README documents adding files under data/ but does not specify supported file formats.
- Repository license information conflicts: the README badge and license section say MIT, while repository metadata identifies Apache-2.0; check the current license file.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up RagDocs for local documentation chat
Install the documented components and start the RagDocs backend and frontend.
Before you start
- Python 3.12 or later
- Node.js 20.17.0
- Milvus 2.0 or later
- Ollama for local LLM support
- Poetry and Yarn for dependency installation
Steps
Clone the RagDocs repository and install its Python dependencies with Poetry.
Install the frontend dependencies from the ragdocs_frontend directory with Yarn.
Copy example.env.local to .env.local and edit the configuration; the README gives Milvus host and port and Ollama model as example settings.
Start Milvus with the provided standalone script, then run the FastAPI backend and Next.js frontend using the documented commands.
Expected outcome
The documented backend and frontend processes are started for using RagDocs.
Guide limitations
- This guide reflects the repository’s documented setup; it does not verify successful installation or runtime behavior.
Add documentation for searching and chat
Place documentation in RagDocs’ data folders and use the frontend to explore it.
Before you start
- A running RagDocs setup
- Documentation files to add
Steps
Place the documentation files in the appropriate folders under data/.
Use the frontend to chat with and explore the documentation.
Use the documented comparison feature to compare technology stacks.
Expected outcome
The documentation collection is available to explore through the RagDocs interface.
Guide limitations
- The README does not specify supported file formats or document-size limits.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
