Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to query reference PDFs conversationally and need answers linked back to source pages, especially if you can configure and operate the documented Python, API-key, and Pinecone setup.
Who it is for
- Researchers looking up information in long PDF collections
- Policy makers working with reports and guidelines
- People building a self-hosted conversational search interface for reference documents
Documented uses
- Ask natural-language questions about a collection of PDFs.
- Find relevant sections in reports or guidelines and follow citations to the source PDF page.
- Build a document-grounded chat interface using Pinecone retrieval and a selectable OpenAI or Groq model.
Requirements & limits
- The documented retrieval stack uses OpenAI embeddings and Pinecone vector search.
- The README lists both OpenAI and Groq model options, but also warns that APIs and model availability can change.
- The setup requires a Pinecone index configured with 1,536 dimensions and cosine similarity.
- The repository identifies Python 3.10 and documents both standard and Docker Compose setup routes.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Rag Nificent with the standard Python workflow
Prepare the application to ingest PDFs and launch its Chainlit interface.
Before you start
- Python 3.10
- Pinecone and OpenAI API keys, plus a Groq API key for the documented environment setup
- A Pinecone index named to match PINECONE_INDEX_NAME, configured with 1,536 dimensions and cosine similarity
- PDF files to place in the pdf_data directory
Steps
Clone the repository and install dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Set PINECONE_INDEX_NAME, PINECONE_NAME_SPACE, OPENAI_API_KEY, PINECONE_API_KEY, and GROQ_API_KEY in a .env file.
Create the matching Pinecone index with dimensions=1536 and metric=cosine.
Place PDFs in pdf_data and run python data_ingestion.py.
Start the interface with chainlit run src/app.py.
Expected outcome
A locally launched Chainlit document-chat application with the PDFs ingested through the documented pipeline.
Guide limitations
- The README describes best-effort maintenance and warns that APIs may change and some models may have been decommissioned.
- The README's clone command uses a placeholder repository path.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
