Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Python project needs a shared high-level workflow for deep-learning models on tabular data, including CPU or GPU training and logging.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building deep-learning workflows for structured datasets.
  • Data practitioners who want to configure, train, evaluate, save and reload tabular models through a shared API.

Documented uses

  • Configure target, continuous and categorical columns for a tabular task.
  • Select and train a supported deep-learning model using training and validation data.
  • Evaluate a trained model on test data and generate predictions.
  • Save a trained model and load it again.
  • Choose among documented model families such as TabNet, NODE, Mixture Density Networks and category-embedding networks.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • PyTorch should be installed first; the project recommends selecting the appropriate CUDA version for the machine.
  • The core package and an extra-dependencies installation are documented separately; the latter includes Weights & Biases and Plotly.
  • The documented example requires the user to provide target and feature-column names and train, validation and test data.
  • The README identifies the project as open source and links an MIT license.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install PyTorch Tabular

Install the library after setting up PyTorch.

Before you start

  • Python package installer pip.
  • PyTorch installed first; choose the appropriate CUDA version for the machine if using CUDA.

Steps

  1. Install PyTorch using the PyTorch installation guidance for the machine.

  2. Install the core library with the command below, or install the command below for the extra dependencies, including Weights & Biases and Plotly.

    Documented command
    pip install -U pytorch_tabular
    Documented command
    pip install -U 'pytorch_tabular[extra]'

Expected outcome

The PyTorch Tabular package is installed with either its bare essentials or the documented extra dependencies.

Guide limitations

  • This covers installation only; it does not verify that a particular environment or hardware configuration works.
  • The extra installation includes Weights & Biases and Plotly; the core installation does not specify these extras.

Train and evaluate a tabular model

Configure a model, fit it on training data, evaluate it, and create predictions.

Before you start

  • PyTorch Tabular installed.
  • Tabular data available as train, val, and test inputs, with target, continuous-column and categorical-column names supplied in the configuration.

Steps

  1. Create a DataConfig with the target, continuous columns and categorical columns.

  2. Choose a model configuration and set trainer parameters, then create a TabularModel with data, model, optimizer and trainer configurations.

  3. Call fit with training and validation data, then call evaluate on test data and predict to generate predictions.

  4. Save the model with save_model; use load_model to load a saved model.

Expected outcome

The documented workflow produces evaluation results and predictions and demonstrates saving and reloading the model.

Guide limitations

  • The example’s dataset variables and column lists must be provided by the user.
  • The example is an API workflow, not a guarantee of results for a particular dataset or environment.
