Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a tutorial-led route into PyTorch with C++ and LibTorch is more relevant than a Python-only implementation.
Who it is for
- Deep-learning researchers learning PyTorch through C++
- C++ developers exploring LibTorch
- Learners comparing PyTorch concepts with native C++ implementations
Documented uses
- Study PyTorch fundamentals through C++ examples
- Experiment with neural networks, recurrent models, GANs and language models
- Configure tutorial builds with CMake and LibTorch
- Use interactive notebook material for tensor operations
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, active in the supplied record, open source, and licensed under MIT. No account or pricing requirement is documented.
- The examples are organized into basics, intermediate and advanced sections.
- The documented toolchain includes C++17, CMake 3.28.6 or newer, LibTorch and Conda.
- CMake supports CPU or selected CUDA downloads, local LibTorch paths, dataset downloads and scriptmodule creation.
- The repository documents macOS, Linux and Windows configurations, with Windows-specific generator and Release-build requirements.
- Interactive tutorials use a nightly LibTorch version and may be less stable with that version.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure and build the tutorial repository locally
Set up the documented C++ tutorial project and generate its CMake build system.
Before you start
- A C++17-compatible compiler
- CMake 3.28.6 or newer
- LibTorch version 1.12.0 through 2.14.0, or a supported CMake download configuration
- Conda
- A local clone of the repository
Steps
Create a Conda environment with
conda create --name pytorch-cppand activate it withconda activate pytorch-cpp.Clone the repository and enter its directory with the command below and
cd pytorch-cpp.git clone https://github.com/prabhuomkar/pytorch-cpp.gitGenerate the build system with
cmake -B build.Adjust documented CMake options if needed, such as
CUDA_V,DOWNLOAD_DATASETS,CREATE_SCRIPTMODULES, orCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH.Build using the generated build system; on Windows with Visual Studio, append
--config Release.
Expected outcome
A configured local build directory for the repository's C++ tutorials.
Guide limitations
- Interactive tutorials use a LibTorch nightly version and may break with that version.
- Windows requires 64-bit support and an x64 generator.
- Creating scriptmodule files requires installed Python with PyTorch and torchvision.
