Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Pydantic AI agent needs explicit task state rather than relying only on conversation history, especially when plans must persist or task events must reach another component.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building agents with Pydantic AI.
  • Teams that need structured plans, task dependencies or persistent agent task state.
  • Builders creating interfaces or workflows driven by agent planning events.

Documented uses

  • Create and update agent task lists.
  • Represent work as subtasks with dependencies.
  • Persist task state in PostgreSQL for multi-tenant use.
  • Expose task events to webhooks and callbacks.
  • Add planning through a capability or lower-level toolset integration.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public, open source and MIT licensed. It documents Python 3.10 or later, pip or uv installation, and Linux, macOS, Windows, server and self-hosted use in the technical profile.

  • The capabilities API automatically registers the todo tools and planning prompt; the lower-level toolset API requires manual prompt wiring.
  • Subtasks, dependencies and available-task queries require enable_subtasks=True.
  • The documented PostgreSQL option is intended for persistent, multi-tenant task storage.
  • The repository is described as superseded by the planning module in pydantic-ai-harness, which also changes names for capabilities, stores and tools.
  • The library is a development component for Pydantic AI applications, not a hosted task-management service.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add basic task planning to a Pydantic AI agent

Install the library and attach its documented capability to an existing Pydantic AI agent.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10 or later.
  • A Python project using Pydantic AI.
  • A configured model identifier, as shown by the repository examples.

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below or add it with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install pydantic-ai-todo
    Documented command
    uv add pydantic-ai-todo
  2. Import Agent from pydantic_ai and TodoCapability from pydantic_ai_todo.

  3. Create an agent with TodoCapability() in its capabilities list.

  4. Run the agent with a planning request, such as creating a todo list for a REST API.

Expected outcome

The agent has the documented todo tools and can create and track tasks through the capability integration.

Guide limitations

  • The documented example uses in-memory storage unless another storage implementation is supplied.
  • The repository states that the planning implementation was folded into pydantic-ai-harness; it does not document migration steps.
