Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Julia workflow needs prompt-based model interaction, templated inputs, or generated responses available as Julia objects. The project frames it as an everyday tool and prototype aid rather than a foundation for large-scale systems.
Who it is for
- Julia developers adding language-model calls to scripts or data-science projects
- Developers prototyping generative-AI workflows in Julia
Documented uses
- Send a prompt to a language model from Julia code.
- Build prompts from interpolated variables or reusable templates.
- Continue a conversation and pass generated message content into downstream code.
- Save conversations as files for a separate fine-tuning data-preparation workflow.
Requirements & limits
The package is installed with Julia’s package manager. The documented OpenAI quick start requires an API key and notes a $5 minimum credit purchase; this billing requirement applies to that provider-specific path.
- The project is a Julia package, so its examples and setup assume a Julia environment.
- The README demonstrates macros, interpolated prompts, handlebars-style templates, continuing conversations, asynchronous calls and model selection flags.
- The README names Ollama, MistralAI and other OpenAI-compatible APIs, and Anthropic models; provider setup and supported operations should be checked in the documentation.
- RAG functionality has moved from PromptingTools.Experimental.RAGTools to the separate RAGTools.jl package.
- The README says the package is intended for everyday use rather than building large-scale systems.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the package and make an OpenAI prompt
Set up PromptingTools.jl and send a simple prompt using the documented OpenAI quick start.
Before you start
- Julia and its package manager
- An OpenAI API key set as the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable
- OpenAI credits; the README states a $5 minimum for its quick start
Steps
In Julia, install the package with Pkg.add("PromptingTools").
Import it with using PromptingTools.
Set ENV["OPENAI_API_KEY"] to your key.
Send a prompt with the @ai_str macro, for example ai"What is the capital of France?".
Read the generated message from the returned object’s content field.
Expected outcome
A generated AIMessage is returned for use in subsequent Julia code.
Guide limitations
- This recipe follows the README’s OpenAI quick start; provider-specific setup for other integrations is not covered here.
- The README’s OpenAI billing note is specific to its stated quick-start instructions.
