Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Go server needs to call Pinecone Database APIs directly for index administration, document or vector operations, search, or supported inference tasks.
Who it is for
- Go backend developers adding Pinecone-backed search or retrieval to an application.
- Teams managing Pinecone documents, vector records, indexes, or namespaces from Go services.
Documented uses
- Create and manage Pinecone indexes and namespaces.
- Upsert, query, fetch, update, delete, or list vector records.
- Write and search documents using full-text or vector search.
- Generate embeddings or rerank results with models hosted by Pinecone.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The documented integration requires a Pinecone API key configured in the `PINECONE_API_KEY` environment variable.
- The SDK targets Pinecone API version 2026-07; review the v7 migration notes when moving from v6 or earlier.
- The README lists Go 1.25 or later as a prerequisite.
- Document indexing is asynchronous and may take up to a minute before new documents are searchable.
- Optional automatic retries use exponential backoff.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the SDK and its API key
Install the Go package and configure the credential the client reads from the environment.
Before you start
- Go 1.25 or later
- A Pinecone API key
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
go get github.com/pinecone-io/go-pinecone/v7/pineconeSet the API key as the
PINECONE_API_KEYenvironment variable.
Expected outcome
The Go project has the SDK dependency and the environment variable used by the documented client setup.
Guide limitations
- This covers installation and credential configuration, not a complete application workflow.
Create and search a document index
Use the documented Go quickstart stages to create a full-text-search document index, add documents, and search them.
Before you start
- Go 1.25 or later
- A Pinecone API key set as
PINECONE_API_KEY - The SDK installed in the Go project
Steps
Create a Pinecone client and create a document index with full-text-search fields such as
titleandbody.Wait until the index is ready, then create an index connection for the index host and a namespace.
Upsert documents containing the indexed fields.
Search the selected fields with a query and choose which fields to include in the results.
Expected outcome
The example workflow returns matching document results with selected fields.
Guide limitations
- Document indexing is asynchronous and can take up to a minute to become searchable.
- The README example includes a readiness polling helper and a 30-second wait before searching.
