Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Pi workflow needs MCP tools and you want tool discovery and server startup to happen on demand rather than keeping every server active with all definitions loaded.

Who it is for

  • Pi coding-agent users who need tools exposed by MCP servers.
  • Developers configuring multiple MCP servers who want to avoid loading all tool definitions into the model context at once.

Documented uses

  • Search available MCP tools by keyword and inspect their parameters before calling them.
  • Add an MCP server through project configuration or the Pi setup flow.
  • Import MCP configurations from supported coding environments.
  • Choose whether servers start on demand or remain running through lifecycle settings.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and declares an MIT license. The documented interface is a CLI adapter for Pi.

  • The adapter replaces Pi’s built-in MCP support in Pi sessions.
  • Its default single-lookup path is a JSON call through the proxy; script modes are opt-in, and the project notes different token-cost trade-offs for bulk work.
  • Servers start on first use and stop after 10 idle minutes by default; a keep-alive lifecycle can be configured for stateful servers.
  • The adapter supports MCP prompts, elicitation and UI apps, but does not send session-directory roots to servers.
  • Pi permission extensions see proxy calls as the proxy tool; Pi’s built-in MCP exposes each MCP call separately to those extensions.

Source-based practical guide

Configure an MCP server in a Pi project

Add a server configuration so Pi MCP Adapter can discover and call its tools.

Before you start

  • Pi coding agent with Pi MCP Adapter installed
  • An MCP server command and its required runtime; the example uses npx and Chrome DevTools MCP

Steps

  1. Add an mcpServers entry for the server to the project’s .mcp.json file.

  2. Use the adapter’s mcp search action with a term describing the tool, such as screenshot.

  3. Inspect the returned tool name and parameters.

  4. Call the tool through the adapter’s mcp action with the required arguments.

Expected outcome

The Pi agent can discover and invoke a configured MCP server tool through the adapter.

Guide limitations

  • The documented example uses Chrome DevTools MCP; other servers may require different configuration.
  • Servers start lazily by default and therefore connect when their tools are first called.
Source-based practical guide

Import existing MCP configuration into Pi

Bring supported server configurations from another coding environment into the adapter’s setup flow.

Before you start

  • Pi coding agent with Pi MCP Adapter installed
  • Existing MCP configuration from Cursor, Claude Code, Codex or VS Code on the machine

Steps

  1. Run /mcp-adapter setup in a Pi session, or run pi-mcp-adapter init.

  2. Use the setup flow to import configurations it finds on the machine.

Expected outcome

The setup flow imports found MCP configurations into the adapter’s configuration.

Guide limitations

  • The documented import sources are Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and VS Code.
  • The available instructions describe configuration import, not verification that every imported server can run.
