Parlant

Parlant is an Apache-2.0 Python framework that controls context, rules, knowledge and tool use for customer-facing AI agents. It is designed to make LLM conversations more consistent, predictable, compliant, on-brand and traceable by selecting relevant context for each turn and applying behavioral controls during interaction design.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Parlant when an AI agent must handle varied customer conversations while following specific tone, timing, edge-case, policy and tool-use requirements.

Who it is for

  • Developers building customer-support agents.
  • Teams creating B2C conversational assistants with policy or brand requirements.
  • B2B teams developing sensitive service agents.
  • Python developers integrating agents with OpenAI, Google Gemini or Llama ecosystems.

Documented uses

  • Define conversational rules and guidelines.
  • Condition tool use on observations in the conversation.
  • Supply only immediately relevant context to an LLM turn.
  • Build customer-facing interactions with more consistent and traceable behavior.
  • Adjust conversational behavior without relying solely on increasingly large system prompts.

Requirements & limits

The project is publicly available on GitHub, is open source under the Apache-2.0 license, and documents Python 3.10+ installation through pip.

  • Parlant is a framework for building agents, not a ready-made customer-service application.
  • Its central distinction is conversational governance and behavioral control rather than general workflow automation or low-level prompt optimization.
  • Python is required for the documented installation and SDK workflow.
  • The project materials identify OpenAI, Google Gemini and Llama as supported LLM ecosystems.
  • Conditional observations, guidelines, dependencies and tools are useful when responses must vary according to customer context.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
