Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have a Solana/Anchor IDL and want to inspect or invoke the program from a terminal, or derive a PDA from its documented seeds. Choose local IDL mode to avoid the Orquestra API; choose API mode when using uploaded IDL metadata.
Who it is for
- Solana developers working with programs described by Anchor IDLs.
- Developers who want an interactive terminal workflow for choosing instructions and supplying arguments and accounts.
- Users who want either an API-backed metadata workflow or a local-IDL workflow that works offline.
Documented uses
- List the instructions available for a program.
- Select an instruction and provide its arguments and accounts through prompts.
- Derive a PDA by selecting a PDA account and supplying seed values.
- Build a Solana transaction and either prepare it unsigned or sign and send it with a local keypair.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents an API mode that requires an Orquestra account and API key, and a local IDL file mode that does not. It lists installation options for macOS and Linux, including release binaries for specified architectures, and Homebrew on macOS.
- API mode uses cloud-fetched instruction metadata and requires an Orquestra account, uploaded Anchor IDL, project ID and API key; local IDL mode reads a local Solana/Anchor IDL JSON file and works offline.
- A configured local keypair enables signing and broadcasting through a configured Solana RPC endpoint; without one, the CLI outputs a base58-encoded unsigned transaction for wallet signing.
- The CLI can automatically fill signer accounts when a keypair is configured, derive PDAs whose seeds can be resolved from inputs, and fill fixed-address accounts.
- Building from source requires Rust 1.75 or later; prebuilt installation options are documented for macOS and Linux.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up local IDL file mode
Configure the CLI to use a local Solana/Anchor IDL without an Orquestra account or API key.
Before you start
- Orquestra CLI
- A Solana/Anchor IDL JSON file
- A Solana RPC endpoint if using sign-and-send
- A local Solana keypair JSON file only if signing and sending with the CLI
Steps
Set the IDL path and RPC endpoint with
orquestra config set --idl /path/to/program.json --rpc https://api.mainnet-beta.solana.com.Optionally add
--keypair ~/.config/solana/id.jsonto configure a local keypair.Run
orquestra config showto inspect the configuration.
Expected outcome
The CLI is configured in local file mode and can use the local IDL without an Orquestra account or API key.
Guide limitations
- The documented local-file mode requires a Solana/Anchor IDL JSON file.
- This setup recipe does not cover executing an instruction.
- A keypair is optional; without one, the CLI can print an unsigned transaction for manual wallet signing.
Set up API mode
Configure the CLI to fetch instruction metadata through the Orquestra API.
Before you start
- An Orquestra account
- An Anchor IDL uploaded to Orquestra
- A project ID and API key
- A Solana RPC endpoint
- A local keypair JSON file only if signing and sending with the CLI
Steps
Sign in at orquestra.dev, upload the Anchor IDL and generate an API key from the dashboard.
Configure the project ID, API key and RPC endpoint with
orquestra config set --project-id --api-key --rpc https://api.mainnet-beta.solana.com.Optionally add
--keypair ~/.config/solana/id.jsonfor local signing.Run
orquestra config showto inspect the configuration.
Expected outcome
The CLI is configured in API mode, where instruction metadata is fetched from the cloud.
Guide limitations
- This mode requires an Orquestra account and API key.
- A keypair is optional; without one, the CLI prints an unsigned transaction for manual wallet signing.
- This setup recipe does not cover executing an instruction.
