Practical overview
When it fits
Use Openless when you want to enter or draft text by speaking without leaving the active desktop text field.
Who it is for
- People who want to dictate into text fields across desktop apps.
- Writers and developers who want to turn spoken thoughts into polished text or structured AI prompts.
Documented uses
- Dictate text into the field where you are working.
- Transform speech into text polished in a selected writing style.
- Speak freely and produce a structured prompt for an AI assistant or coding tool.
Requirements & limits
The repository presents Openless as open-source software for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It lists an AGPL-3.0 license.
- The workflow is designed around a hotkey, speech capture, and insertion at the active cursor.
- AI polishing in a selected writing style distinguishes it from simple word-for-word dictation.
- If text insertion is blocked, the project describes copying the result to the clipboard instead.
- The repository identifies the implementation stack as Rust and Tauri.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Dictate AI-polished text into an active text field
Use OpenLess to capture speech, polish it in a selected writing style, and insert the result at the cursor.
Before you start
- OpenLess on macOS 12 or later, Windows 10 or later, or Linux.
- An active text field with the cursor positioned where the text should appear.
Steps
Place the cursor in the target text field.
Choose the writing style you want OpenLess to use.
Hold the global hotkey and speak.
Release the hotkey to finish capture and have the polished text inserted at the cursor.
Expected outcome
AI-polished text appears at the cursor; if insertion is blocked, OpenLess copies the text to the clipboard.
Guide limitations
- The README does not specify the hotkey assignment or how to configure writing styles.
- Clipboard fallback is described for blocked insertion; other failure behavior is not specified.
