Practical overview
When it fits
Use Openagent when you need a workspace to create and operate your own AI applications, especially when those apps need visual workflows, dataset retrieval, tool connections, multi-step execution or API delivery.
Who it is for
- Teams building vertical AI-agent applications.
- Developers who need visual workflow authoring, retrieval, tool orchestration or API delivery for AI apps.
Documented uses
- Configure an AI app’s model, prompts and connected capabilities, then manage drafts and versions.
- Create visual workflows combining language models, tools, dataset retrieval, code and HTTP requests.
- Use datasets and documents to add retrieval to agents and workflows.
- Coordinate connected capabilities across multi-step tasks with Deep Research mode.
- Publish apps for REST and server-sent-events delivery.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The documented full-stack setup requires Docker, Docker Compose and a supported model-provider API key.
- Deployment is self-hosted through a Docker Compose stack in the setup instructions.
- The README lists PostgreSQL, Redis and Weaviate configuration among the required environment settings.
- Model-provider integration requires at least one supported provider API key.
- The app workspace includes debugging and execution traces alongside model, prompt and capability configuration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Openagent with Docker Compose
Prepare the repository configuration and start the documented local service stack.
Before you start
- Docker 20.10+ and Docker Compose 2.x
- Access to at least one supported model-provider API key
- The README recommends 8 GB or more of RAM for the full stack
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
Copy api/.env.example to api/.env.
Set the required JWT_SECRET_KEY, POSTGRES_PASSWORD, REDIS_PASSWORD, WEAVIATE_API_KEY and VITE_API_PREFIX values, plus at least one supported provider key.
From the docker directory, run docker compose up -d --build.
Use the documented local frontend at http://localhost:3000 and API at http://localhost:5001.
Expected outcome
The documented Docker stack is configured to provide a local web interface and Flask API.
Guide limitations
- The guide describes setup and the documented local service addresses; it does not establish that a deployment has been run or verified.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Openagent | Configure an AI app’s model, prompts and connected capabilities, then manage drafts and versions. | Self-hosted, Server, Web | The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The documented full-stack setup requires Docker, Docker Compose and a supported model-provider API key. |
| Agenite | Define typed tools with JSON Schema validation and error handling. | CLI | |
| Veldra | Create an agent with a policy, tools, skills, knowledge base and reasoning method. | Self-hosted | The documented deployment is self-hosted and uses a sign-in gate after a first-run administrator account is created. |
