Practical overview
When it fits
Use OP Vault when you have a collection of human-readable documents and want question-answering that points back to source files and context. The documented local setup suits users able to configure Go, Node.js, Poppler, OpenAI and Pinecone.
Who it is for
- People who want to ask questions across a personal library of books, letters or reference documents.
- Organizations seeking a self-hosted document knowledge-base chat interface.
- Developers exploring a Go and React application that connects OpenAI with Pinecone.
Documented uses
- Upload supported documents to create a custom knowledge base.
- Ask questions about the uploaded collection rather than relying only on general chat context.
- Review the filename and context snippet associated with an answer.
Requirements & limits
The project is an open-source repository under the MIT license. Its README documents a local development setup using OpenAI and Pinecone credentials.
- The workflow depends on external OpenAI and Pinecone services and their credentials.
- The README lists PDF, EPUB, DOCX and plain text as accepted upload formats.
- The upload handler is described with a 300 MB total upload limit.
- The documented setup requires Go, Node.js 19 and Poppler.
- Answers can include filenames and context snippets, providing a way to inspect the material associated with a response.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up OP Vault locally
Prepare the documented local development environment and open its local web interface.
Before you start
- Go; the README lists Go 1.18.9 for darwin/arm64.
- Node.js 19 and Poppler.
- OpenAI API key and Pinecone API key and endpoint.
- A Pinecone index configured with vector size 1536 and default settings.
Steps
Install Go, Node.js 19 and Poppler.
Create the files secret/openai_api_key, secret/pinecone_api_key and secret/pinecone_api_endpoint with the corresponding credentials and endpoint.
Run npm install, then run npm start to start the web server.
In another terminal, run npm run dev and visit http://localhost:8100.
Expected outcome
The README's local development setup serves the application at localhost:8100, with the frontend bundle compiled.
Guide limitations
- This is a setup and development workflow; the instructions do not document a production deployment.
- The upload handler description specifies a 300 MB total upload limit.
