Practical overview
When it fits
Use Odyssey when an experiment needs an OP Stack testnet or local node with the project’s listed experimental Ethereum features, rather than a general-purpose application.
Who it is for
- Ethereum developers exploring experimental EIPs and execution-layer behavior.
- Researchers testing precompiles or instructions in a rollup environment.
- Developers evaluating tooling against Odyssey’s OP Stack setup.
Documented uses
- Explore listed experimental Ethereum features such as EIP-7702, RIP-7212, EIP-2537 and EOF.
- Build and start a local Odyssey node for development and testing.
- Set up a local full OP Stack network using the repository’s Kurtosis configuration.
- Test EIP-7702 delegation transactions through Odyssey’s custom wallet namespace.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and open-source. Its license offers Apache-2.0 or MIT terms.
- Odyssey is a testnet rollup for experimentation, not an ordinary end-user application.
- The documented local development mode starts an execution node; a full OP Stack setup additionally needs L1 infrastructure and op-node.
- The custom wallet namespace requires a signing private key and limits the transactions it will sign.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and start a local Odyssey development node
Build Odyssey from source and start its documented local development configuration.
Before you start
- A local development environment with Git and Cargo.
- The Odyssey repository.
Steps
Clone https://github.com/ithacaxyz/odyssey and change into the repository directory.
Build and install the binary with the command below.
cargo install --path bin/odysseyStart the development node with
odyssey node --chain etc/odyssey-genesis.json --dev --http --http.api all.
Expected outcome
The README says this starts a development-configured node and exposes its HTTP API at http://localhost:8545.
Guide limitations
- This is a local node-development setup, not the full Odyssey OP Stack; running the full stack requires additional L1 infrastructure.
- For EOF-enabled Foundry, the README directs users to install forge-eof by following its own instructions.
