Practical overview
When it fits
Use Octop when a person, household or small team needs a self-hosted assistant that combines multiple specialized agents with shared workspaces, persistent memory, messaging access and automation. It is also relevant when developer workflows need ACP connections to OpenCode or Claude Code, or when private documents should ground assistant responses.
Who it is for
- Individuals wanting a local assistant with persistent workspace memory.
- Households sharing agents, experts and knowledge bases through one deployment.
- Small teams coordinating specialized agents and reusable skills.
- Developers connecting assistant workflows to terminal and coding tools through ACP.
Documented uses
- Run personal assistants for reports, notes and scheduling.
- Coordinate multi-step work with parallel agents or AgentTeams.
- Share experts, skills and sub-agent pools across users.
- Ground answers in private documents through a RAG knowledge base.
- Connect assistant workflows to messaging channels, browser automation, terminal assistance and coding tools.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available as open-source software under the MIT license. The repository documents Linux, macOS and Windows targets, Python 3.12+ and self-hosted deployment.
- Self-hosting: conversations, workspaces and credentials are described as remaining on the user's machine.
- Multi-user design: JWT isolation and shared experts support household and team deployments.
- Storage flexibility: control-plane data uses SQLite by default, with PostgreSQL available as an option; agent files can use several workspace backends.
- Integration breadth: the project lists web, CLI, IM, HTTP/SSE/WebSocket, OAuth, MCP and ACP access paths.
- Automation scope: cron, browser automation, terminal assistance and remote desktop extend the assistant beyond chat.

Set up Octop as a self-hosted multi-agent assistant
Prepare a local Octop deployment with its dashboard, CLI, integrations and shared workspace architecture.
Before you start
- A Linux, macOS or Windows machine.
- Python 3.12 or newer.
- The Octop source repository or its published Python package.
- A local control-plane data location; SQLite is the default, with PostgreSQL documented as an option.
Steps
Obtain Octop from the official repository or Python package listed by the project.
Run Octop as the single process described by the project so the web dashboard, CLI, messaging channels and cron are available together.
Choose a workspace backend for agent files: local disk, Docker sandbox, PostgreSQL or COS/S3.
Configure users, experts, connectors or knowledge bases for the intended individual, household or team workflow.
Expected outcome
A self-hosted Octop environment prepared for multi-user, multi-agent assistance and shared workspaces.
Guide limitations
- The supplied setup material does not document exact installation commands, provider configuration steps or a completed task run.
- AgentTeams is identified as beta.
