Nightshift

Nightshift is an open-source Shell developer tool that manages long-running coding-agent sessions for Cursor, OpenAI Codex and Claude Code. It stores task state, supports recovery, blocks premature clock-out of unfinished work and organizes results for review.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Nightshift when coding-agent work needs durable state, explicit task completion checks or a reviewable record beyond one conversational session. Start with a small attended task before leaving a longer shift alone.

Who it is for

  • Developers running extended autonomous coding tasks
  • Teams or individuals maintaining a reviewable backlog for coding agents
  • Cursor, Codex and Claude Code users who need persistent project state

Documented uses

  • Run a prepared coding task list over an extended shift
  • Give an agent an objective and a time limit
  • Recover progress after supported session failures or interruptions
  • Review completed, parked, blocked and in-progress work
  • Continue unfinished work from archived shift history

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT licensed. Documented host support covers Cursor, OpenAI Codex and Claude Code, with macOS, Linux and native Windows runtime guidance.

  • Host choice matters because installation and recovery behavior are host-specific.
  • A persistent Git repository or local folder is needed where project changes can be retained and reviewed.
  • The tool records token usage and duration only where the host provides those measurements.
  • Nightshift supports recovery under its documented host signals; the project directs users to read host-specific recovery limitations.
  • Human review and project checks remain necessary for judging whether an item is good.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up a first attended Nightshift shift

Prepare Nightshift in a project and start a small coding-agent task for attended review.

Before you start

  • A supported host: Cursor, OpenAI Codex or Claude Code.
  • A Git repository or persistent local project folder for Codex work.
  • A project you trust and one small task.

Steps

  1. Install Nightshift through the documented host-specific marketplace or import flow.

  2. Ask Nightshift to set up the project, or use the Claude Code setup command; review the proposed checks and permissions before applying them.

  3. Add one task under ## Items in .nightshift/punch-list.md.

  4. Start the shift through the host-specific start action and keep the first run attended.

  5. Use the documented status, doctor and stop actions to inspect or end the shift.

Expected outcome

The project has Nightshift setup and a small attended shift whose progress can be inspected and stopped through the supported host.

Guide limitations

  • The supplied installation text does not document the complete example task or the full execution sequence.
  • Recovery and command-line behavior vary by host; the project directs users to its host-specific limitations documentation.
  • A disposable ChatGPT scratch conversation cannot preserve project changes.
