Practical overview
When it fits
Use NanoDet-Plus when you need a compact object-detection model and want to evaluate its documented mobile or C++ inference routes, or when you need a repository with training configurations and pretrained variants.
Who it is for
- Developers adding object detection to Android or mobile applications.
- Practitioners building on-device visual monitoring prototypes.
- Researchers and developers training or adapting lightweight object-detection models.
Documented uses
- Detect objects in mobile-device imagery in real time.
- Explore an Android inference demo based on NCNN.
- Use the provided C++ demos to explore inference with NCNN, MNN or OpenVINO.
- Set up the Python environment and use sample configurations or pretrained weights as a starting point for model work.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project license as Apache-2.0.
- The README documents separate Android, NCNN, MNN and OpenVINO demos; select the path that matches the intended integration.
- The model zoo lists variants with different resolutions, parameter counts and benchmark figures, making model size and input resolution relevant selection factors.
- The documented training setup requires Linux or macOS, CUDA 10.2 or later, Python 3.7 or later, and PyTorch from 1.10 up to but not including 2.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the NanoDet Python environment
Install the documented development environment and set up the repository; this guide does not cover training or inference execution.
Before you start
- Linux or macOS
- Python 3.7 or later
- CUDA 10.2 or later
- PyTorch 1.10 or later and below 2.0
Steps
Create and activate a conda environment using Python 3.8.
Install PyTorch and torchvision with the documented conda command for CUDA Toolkit 11.1.
Clone the NanoDet repository and change into its directory.
Install requirements from requirements.txt, then run python setup.py develop.
Expected outcome
The repository's documented Python development environment is installed and NanoDet is set up in editable/development mode.
Guide limitations
- The sample PyTorch installation command uses CUDA Toolkit 11.1; no alternative installation commands are provided here.
- This setup sequence does not document how to train a model or run inference.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| NanoDet-Plus | Detect objects in mobile-device imagery in real time. | Android, Mobile | The repository is public and identifies the project license as Apache-2.0. |
| Pulse Of Motion | Estimate a video's physical frame rate from its visual dynamics. | Linux | The repository is public. Its README describes a released checkpoint that downloads from Hugging Face on first inference, with a manual download option. The strongest internal model is not fully released; the README directs interested users to contact the project about access. No license information is provided in the repository evidence. |
| Neural Image Assessment | Train the model using AVA images and rating annotations. | Cloud, Linux, macOS, Windows |
