Practical overview
When it fits
Use Move when exploring transaction-oriented program development or following the repository’s Docker-based CLI quickstart to build its BasicCoin test project.
Who it is for
- Developers exploring a language and toolchain for blockchain programs.
- Developers who want to build the repository’s documented BasicCoin test project with Docker.
Documented uses
- Build the Move command-line tool as a Docker image.
- Build the tutorial’s BasicCoin test project with the CLI.
- Develop transaction-oriented programs using Move’s type system and verification features.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache 2.0. The documented quickstart uses Docker.
- The documented CLI workflow builds and runs through Docker.
- The language provides linear resource types, runtime checks, and formal verification.
- The quickstart demonstrates building a test project; it does not document deployment.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the CLI image and BasicCoin test project
Use the repository’s documented Docker commands to build the Move CLI image and then build the tutorial’s BasicCoin test project.
Before you start
- Docker
- A local checkout of the Move repository, with its Dockerfile and tutorial files
Steps
From the repository root, run the command below.
docker build -t move/cli -f docker/move-cli/Dockerfile .Change to
./language/documentation/tutorial/step_1/BasicCoin.Run the command belowpwd
:/project move/cli build.docker run -v
Expected outcome
The CLI Docker image is built, and the documented command invokes its build operation on the BasicCoin test project.
Guide limitations
- The quickstart documents building a test project, not deploying it or verifying a blockchain transaction.
