Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a mining setup needs self-hosted, peer-to-peer Monero pool infrastructure instead of a centralized pool operator.
Who it is for
- Monero miners who want decentralized pool infrastructure
- Operators running their own Monero and P2Pool nodes
- Developers building or adapting self-hosted Monero mining services
Documented uses
- Coordinate decentralized Monero pool mining
- Track miner shares through a PPLNS payout window
- Distribute eligible block rewards directly to miner wallets
- Provide infrastructure for multi-node and privacy-network mining configurations
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, active and licensed under GPL-3.0. The documented mining setup requires a synchronized Monero node, P2Pool software and optional miner software. The project supports Linux, Windows and macOS environments according to the technical project classification.
- A synchronized monerod v0.18.0.0 or newer is required for the documented mining setup.
- The default PPLNS window is up to 2,160 pool blocks, described as about six hours, with automatic adjustment.
- The listed approximate minimum payout is 0.00027 XMR, and the project states that pool and payout fees are 0%.
- The setup can use multiple P2Pool and Monero nodes, with failover and switching between Monero nodes supported.
- Tor and I2P mining are documented as supported configurations.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a Monero P2Pool mining setup
Set up the documented software prerequisites for mining through P2Pool.
Before you start
- A computer or server suitable for self-hosted mining
- A fully synchronized Monero node running monerod v0.18.0.0 or newer
- P2Pool software
- Optional miner software
- A separate restricted operating-system user account is recommended
Steps
Obtain the official Monero binaries if a synchronized Monero node is not already available.
Start monerod and wait until the Monero node is fully synchronized.
Install or build P2Pool and keep both Monero and P2Pool updated to the latest available versions.
Add optional miner software and configure the mining setup according to the project documentation.
Expected outcome
The documented prerequisites for connecting a miner to a self-hosted Monero P2Pool setup are in place.
Guide limitations
- The supplied instructions do not document a complete miner configuration or verify a successful mining session.
- Payouts depend on finding Monero blocks and on shares remaining within the PPLNS window.
- Pool-status and monitoring pages listed by the project are third-party services.
