Mithril

Mithril is an open-source Rust protocol on Cardano that lets proof-of-stake stakeholders produce individual signatures and combines them into stake-weighted threshold multi-signatures. Its repository includes signer and aggregator nodes, cryptographic libraries, client libraries, a CLI, a WebAssembly client, an explorer, and infrastructure components for operating a Mithril network.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Mithril when a Cardano application or infrastructure workflow needs threshold signatures tied to network stake, certified blockchain snapshots, or a client-side way to consume verified artifacts without processing the full chain.

Who it is for

  • Cardano stake pool operators
  • Developers building Cardano nodes and infrastructure
  • Teams implementing stake-based authorization or verification
  • Applications that consume certified Cardano data

Documented uses

  • Aggregate stakeholder signatures into stake-weighted multi-signatures
  • Provide certified snapshots of the Cardano blockchain
  • Support faster bootstrapping or restoration of a Cardano node
  • Retrieve and verify certified artifacts through client libraries, CLI tools or WebAssembly
  • Provide a foundation for certifying deterministically computed data

Requirements & limits

The repository is public, active and licensed under Apache-2.0. Mithril is identified as beta on Cardano mainnet and as a work in progress; the project warns that mainnet use of its signer, aggregator and client components is at the user’s own risk.

  • Choose it when Cardano ecosystem integration is central; the protocol and documented implementation are built around Cardano.
  • The signer, aggregator and client divide the network, aggregation and consumption roles rather than presenting a single application workflow.
  • The Mithril STM library is the relevant component for integrations with the protocol’s cryptographic engine.
  • The client CLI is suited to retrieving certified artifacts, including Cardano chain snapshots, while the client library and WASM library support application integration.
  • Rust is the primary implementation language and Apache-2.0 is the repository license.
