Practical overview
When it fits
Use Micracode when you want an AI-assisted web-app prototyping workspace that keeps project files on your computer and allows direct code editing alongside chat-based iteration.
Who it is for
- Developers prototyping web applications from written requirements.
- People who want to inspect and edit AI-generated code in a local workspace.
- Contributors who want to build or run the project from its TypeScript source.
Documented uses
- Turn an app description into a generated web-project starting point.
- Iterate on generated code through chat prompts.
- Make direct edits in the Monaco editor and preview the app.
- Save project folders locally or explicitly create a temporary public static preview.
Requirements & limits
The README describes a macOS desktop release and a source-development route. Use requires an API key for OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic; source builds additionally require Node.js v22.18.0 and Bun 1.1.0 or later.
- The desktop app's core runs in-process inside Electron, and project folders default to ~/opener-apps.
- The documented providers are OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic; the model picker shows providers with configured keys.
- The repository identifies Next.js 15, React 19, Electron 33, TypeScript, Hono, the pi coding agent SDK, and Monaco Editor in the stack.
- Public sharing is an explicit temporary static-preview action through temp.md, rather than the default local project workflow.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Micracode from source
Prepare the repository and start its desktop development app.
Before you start
- Node.js v22.18.0
- Bun 1.1.0 or later
- An OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic API key
Steps
Use nvm to select the Node.js version pinned by the repository's .nvmrc.
Copy .env.example to .env and add at least one supported provider key.
Run bun install to install the workspaces.
Run bun run desktop to start the desktop app in development.
Expected outcome
The README directs contributors to a running desktop development app with the web UI and core inside Electron.
Guide limitations
- These are source-build instructions; the README describes downloading a macOS release for ordinary desktop use.
- An API key from a listed provider is required.
