Practical overview
When it fits
Use Mevlog when you want to download EVM data from an RPC endpoint and perform SQL analysis against a local SQLite cache, including repeated queries over the same block ranges.
Who it is for
- Developers and analysts who want local SQL access to EVM chain data.
- Users building repeatable transaction-cost or token-activity analyses over selected block ranges.
Documented uses
- Fetch and inspect transactions from an Ethereum block.
- Query cached EVM data with read-only SQL.
- Rank transactions by gas cost and format the result in ETH.
- Decode ERC-20 data and apply EVM-specific calculations using SQLite helpers.
Requirements & limits
The project is open-source and its README describes it as MIT-licensed. The documented CLI installation uses Cargo. The README lists Linux, macOS and Windows as platforms and links to a live SQL demo.
- The data workflow is local: chain data is downloaded from an RPC endpoint and stored in SQLite.
- The interface is a command-line tool, and analysis uses read-only SQL.
- Mevlog includes EVM-specific helpers, including 256-bit arithmetic, token decoding and ETH, gwei and USD formatting.
- The README says an RPC endpoint can be detected through ChainList without additional configuration; users can also use an RPC endpoint as the data source.
- The first run downloads and indexes a signatures database.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Mevlog and query Ethereum block transactions
Install the CLI with Cargo and display transactions from the latest Ethereum mainnet block.
Before you start
- Cargo
- An RPC endpoint; the README says Mevlog can detect one through ChainList without additional configuration.
Steps
Install with the command below.
cargo install mevlog --lockedRun
mevlog block-txs -b latest --chain-id=1to fetch and display transactions from the latest Ethereum mainnet block.
Expected outcome
The CLI displays transactions from the selected latest Ethereum mainnet block.
Guide limitations
- On the first run, a signatures database is downloaded and indexed; the README estimates this can take up to about one minute.
Query transaction costs in a block range
Run a read-only SQL query that ranks transactions by gas cost and formats the result in ETH.
Before you start
- Mevlog installed and access to an RPC endpoint.
- An Ethereum block range to query.
Steps
Run the documented
mevlog querycommand with the chosen block range and--chain-id=1.Use SQL to multiply
gas_usedbyeffective_gas_price, sort by that value and limit the results.Format the cost with
format_ether.
Expected outcome
The query returns transaction hashes and formatted ETH costs for the selected range.
Guide limitations
- The query command runs read-only SQL against data in the local database.
