Practical overview
When it fits
Use MESC when building or using a crypto tool that implements the standard and you want RPC settings shared across tools, languages or environments.
Who it is for
- Developers integrating shared RPC endpoint configuration into crypto tools.
- Users managing RPC endpoint settings for multiple tools that support MESC.
Documented uses
- Keep endpoint details for multiple networks in one JSON configuration.
- Resolve an RPC selection by endpoint name, chain ID or network name in an integrating tool.
- Set up a MESC configuration using the interactive CLI.
Requirements & limits
- MESC is a standard; a tool must implement it to consume the shared configuration.
- The configuration is stored as JSON and can be identified through the MESC_PATH environment variable.
- Reference implementations are listed for CLI, Python and Rust; Go and TypeScript are marked as works in progress.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a MESC configuration with the CLI
Create a MESC JSON configuration through the interactive setup flow and identify it with the MESC_PATH environment variable.
Before you start
- Cargo to install the mesc_cli package.
- On some Linux distributions, pkg-config and SSL development libraries may be needed.
Steps
Install the CLI with the command below.
cargo install mesc_cliRun
mesc setupfor interactive setup.
Expected outcome
A MESC configuration can be created through the CLI setup flow; MESC_PATH identifies the configuration file path for tools using the standard.
Guide limitations
- The documentation notes that some Linux distributions may require additional SSL libraries and pkg-config.
- This setup does not by itself add MESC support to crypto tools; tools need an implementation.
