MEAD

MEAD is an Apache-2.0-licensed Python library for reproducible deep-learning research and NLP model development. It provides extensible components for data loading, model development, training, experiment tracking and production export, plus baseline implementations for comparing NLP models. It supports PyTorch and TensorFlow.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use MEAD when building an NLP model workflow in Python and you want library components for data loading, training, experiment tracking, comparison baselines and export.

Who it is for

  • NLP researchers building and comparing deep-learning models.
  • Python developers who want reusable data-loading, training and experiment-tracking components for NLP work.

Documented uses

  • Develop and train NLP deep-learning models using reusable abstractions.
  • Track experiments to support reproducible research.
  • Compare new models with included baseline implementations.
  • Export trained models into production workflows.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • MEAD is installed as a Python package rather than used as a hosted training service.
  • The documented backend choices are PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • TensorFlow installation requires TensorFlow Addons, either installed separately or through the tf2 extra.
  • Framework version changes may affect backward compatibility; the README lists PyTorch 1.3.0 as a minimum and TensorFlow 2.1.0 and 2.4.1 as tested versions.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install MEAD as a Python package

Install the MEAD package using the documented pip route.

Before you start

  • A Python environment with the chosen deep-learning framework.
  • For TensorFlow, TensorFlow Addons must be installed separately or through the tf2 package extra.

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install mead-baseline
  2. For the documented TensorFlow extra, use the command below instead.

    Documented command
    pip install mead-baseline[tf2]

Expected outcome

MEAD is installed as a Python package.

Guide limitations

  • The README recommends recent framework versions due to backward-incompatible changes.
  • It lists PyTorch 1.3.0 as the minimum for that backend and TensorFlow 2.1.0 and 2.4.1 as tested versions.
