MCP Unity

MCP Unity is an open-source Model Context Protocol integration that connects AI coding assistants to a Unity Editor project through a Node.js server. Its tools let an assistant inspect and modify Unity scenes and GameObjects, manage assets and packages, run tests, and retrieve console logs.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP-compatible coding assistant needs access to Unity Editor context or operations in a project, rather than only providing general coding suggestions.

Who it is for

  • Unity developers who want compatible AI coding assistants to interact with their Editor projects.
  • Teams or individual developers building IDE-assisted Unity workflows.

Documented uses

  • Inspect GameObjects and their components in a Unity project.
  • Create or update GameObjects, components, prefabs and scenes through MCP tools.
  • Add assets to scenes, manage Unity packages and run Unity Test Runner tests.
  • Retrieve Unity console logs or execute Editor menu items from an assistant workflow.

Requirements & limits

The documented setup requires Unity 6 or later and Node.js 18 or later. npm 9 or later is listed for server debugging. The repository is licensed under MIT.

  • The integration requires both the Unity package and a Node.js server.
  • The README documents tools for scenes, GameObjects, components, packages, assets, tests and logs.
  • The bridge binds to localhost by default; remote connections require enabling the setting in the Unity Server Window.
  • MCP package installation is disabled by default because packages can execute Editor code when compiled.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add MCP Unity to a Unity project

Install the Unity package and open its client configuration controls.

Before you start

  • Unity 6 or later
  • Node.js 18 or later
  • A Unity project

Steps

  1. Open Unity Package Manager from Window > Package Manager.

  2. Select the plus button and choose “Add package from git URL...”.

  3. Enter https://github.com/CoderGamester/mcp-unity.git and select Add.

  4. In Unity Editor, open Tools > MCP Unity > Server Window and use Configure for the AI client.

Expected outcome

The Unity package is added to the project and the Server Window provides the documented client-configuration step.

Guide limitations

  • The guide’s configuration step does not provide the full client-specific setup details.
  • Node.js 18 or later is required to start the server; npm 9 or later is specified for debugging.
  • Unity package installation through the MCP tool is disabled by default.
