Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want an MCP-compatible client to work with command-line tools on a Linux host, especially for authorized testing or CTF workflows, and can manage the host and its network access.

Who it is for

  • Security professionals conducting authorized testing
  • CTF participants who want an MCP-connected assistant to work with Linux tools
  • Developers configuring an MCP client-to-terminal bridge

Documented uses

  • Connect an MCP client to a Linux or Kali machine.
  • Send terminal commands and web requests through an assistant workflow.
  • Use listed command-line utilities for security assessment or CTF tasks.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the project as MIT-licensed. The README documents a Kali package installation and a Python source-install route.

  • The server executes raw terminal commands on its Linux host, so the operator should account for the authority and tools available on that machine.
  • The README sets localhost (127.0.0.1) as the default bind address and port 5000; it recommends SSH for remote client access and strongly discourages exposing the server directly.
  • The client and server may run on the same machine or separate machines; the documented client examples include Claude Desktop and 5ire.
  • The named security utilities are tools used through the bridge, so their presence and setup on the host matter to the intended workflow.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install and connect a local MCP client

Set up the server on Kali and connect a client on the same machine.

Before you start

  • A Kali machine
  • Python 3 and the project requirements for the source-install route
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or 5ire

Steps

  1. Install the Kali package with sudo apt install mcp-kali-server, or clone the repository, create a Python virtual environment and install requirements.txt.

  2. Start the server with kali-server-mcp for the package route or ./server.py for the source route.

  3. Start the client with kali-server-mcp --server http://127.0.0.1:5000 or ./client.py --server http://127.0.0.1:5000.

  4. For Claude Desktop, edit its documented configuration file; for 5ire, add an MCP using the documented client command.

Expected outcome

The MCP client is configured to connect to the server on the same Kali machine.

Guide limitations

  • This setup guide documents installation and connection configuration, not a tested command execution result.
  • The server can execute terminal commands on its host; use it only for authorized work.
Source-based practical guide

Connect a separate MCP client through an SSH tunnel

Configure a client on another machine to reach the Linux server through an SSH tunnel.

Before you start

  • A Linux machine running MCP Kali Server
  • A separate client machine with the project client setup
  • SSH access to the Linux host
  • An MCP client

Steps

  1. Start the server on the Linux machine; its documented default is localhost on port 5000.

  2. On the client machine, open an SSH tunnel with ssh -L 5000:localhost:5000 user@LINUX_IP, replacing the placeholder with the host address and account.

  3. Clone the repository on the client, create a Python virtual environment and install requirements.txt.

  4. Run ./client.py --server http://127.0.0.1:5000 while the tunnel is open.

Expected outcome

The client is configured to reach the server through the local end of the SSH tunnel.

Guide limitations

  • The guide assumes SSH access and does not document the result of a live connection.
  • The project strongly discourages openly hosting the server on a network and recommends SSH.
