Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use MaxKB when an organization needs a self-hosted agent framework that combines knowledge retrieval, workflow orchestration and model or tool integrations in one web-accessible application.

Who it is for

  • Teams building document-grounded customer-support assistants
  • Organizations creating internal knowledge-base assistants
  • Developers building multimodal business question-and-answer applications
  • Teams connecting agent capabilities to existing business systems

Documented uses

  • Ingest uploaded or crawled documents into a vectorized knowledge source
  • Build RAG-based agent responses
  • Orchestrate complex AI processes with workflows and functions
  • Connect agent workflows to external tools through MCP
  • Support text, image, audio and video input and output
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under GPL-3.0. The documented quick start uses Docker and provides a web interface on port 8080. No pricing or hosted-service availability is documented.

  • RAG support includes document upload or online crawling, text splitting and vectorization.
  • The workflow engine includes functions and MCP tool use.
  • The platform supports listed private and public model ecosystems, but provider-specific configuration is not documented here.
  • Multimodal input and output cover text, image, audio and video.
  • The quick start documents container startup, but not production hardening or deployment suitability.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start MaxKB with Docker

Start a MaxKB container and open its web interface.

Before you start

  • Docker
  • A server address reachable through port 8080

Steps

  1. Run the documented Docker command: docker run -d --name=maxkb --restart=always -p 8080:8080 -v ~/.maxkb:/opt/maxkb 1panel/maxkb.

  2. Access the MaxKB web interface at http://your_server_ip:8080.

  3. Sign in with the documented default administrator credentials: username admin and password MaxKB@123..

Expected outcome

A running MaxKB Docker container with a web interface available on port 8080.

Guide limitations

  • This documented path demonstrates startup, not production hardening or deployment suitability.
  • The evidence does not establish security practices for retaining default credentials.
  • The evidence does not document subsequent agent, model or knowledge-base configuration steps.
