Practical overview
When it fits
Use Markify when a workflow needs to turn supported files into Markdown before supplying their content to an LLM or a RAG system.
Who it is for
- Teams preparing documents and other files for retrieval-augmented generation pipelines.
- Developers who need a file-to-Markdown conversion stage accessible through a job-based API.
- Users who want a Streamlit interface for uploading files and retrieving converted Markdown.
Documented uses
- Convert PDFs and office documents into Markdown for later indexing or LLM use.
- Convert listed image, audio, web, data and ZIP inputs into Markdown.
- Submit conversion jobs through the API, check job status and download results.
- Choose between fast and advanced PDF parsing modes.
Requirements & limits
The repository describes Markify as open source and documents both a Streamlit interface and Docker deployment.
- PDFs have separate fast and advanced parsing modes; the advanced mode uses MinerU.
- The API is job-based: submit a file, check status, then download the result.
- The documented format list includes PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images, audio, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML and ZIP.
- The cloud parsing mode is marked as in development.
- Docker-based deployment is documented; the application is written in Python.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Convert a file through the FastAPI job API
Submit a file, check its conversion job status and retrieve the Markdown result.
Before you start
- A running Markify API at the documented local address, http://127.0.0.1:20926.
- A file to convert; the README demonstrates a PDF and the advanced mode.
Steps
POST the file to /api/jobs, specifying a conversion mode such as advanced; the example uses CoA.pdf.
Use the returned job_id to query /api/jobs/{job_id} for the job status.
Request /api/jobs/{job_id}/result to download the Markdown file.
Expected outcome
A Markdown result file for the submitted job.
Guide limitations
- The example documents the API flow but does not explain how to install or start the API server.
- Cloud parsing is listed as in development.
- The sample demonstrates a PDF, not every listed file format.
