Practical overview
When it fits
Use ManimML when you want to create code-driven, rendered visuals of machine-learning concepts in the Manim Community workflow.
Who it is for
- Educators and technical communicators creating visual explanations of machine learning.
- Python developers who want to compose machine-learning diagrams and animations as Manim scenes.
Documented uses
- Build visual scenes from feed-forward or convolutional neural-network layers.
- Animate a neural network’s forward pass for an explainer or lesson.
- Combine reusable visual components into videos about machine-learning concepts.
Requirements & limits
- Requires Manim Community, not the original 3Blue1Brown Manim version.
- The documented workflow uses Python scene files and the Manim command-line renderer.
- The project is MIT-licensed.
- The README describes the project as under development, with features subject to change and limited documentation.
- Some recent features may require installing from source.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Render a neural-network forward-pass animation
Create a Manim scene containing a convolutional neural network and render its forward-pass animation.
Before you start
- Manim Community edition installed; the README directs users to install Manim before ManimML.
- ManimML installed from source or with
pip install manim_ml. The README notes some recent features may only be available from source. - A Python scene file, such as
example.py, containing the documented network and animation code.
Steps
Import Manim and
Convolutional2DLayer,FeedForwardLayer, andNeuralNetworkfrommanim_ml.neural_network.Define a
ThreeDSceneand, insideconstruct, assemble aNeuralNetworkfrom convolutional and feed-forward layers.Add the network to the scene, create its forward-pass animation with
make_forward_pass_animation(), and play the animation.Run
manim -pql example.pyfrom the command line to render the low-resolution video; the README givesmanim -pqh example.pyfor higher quality.
Expected outcome
A rendered video showing the neural-network forward pass; higher-quality rendering takes longer, according to the README.
Guide limitations
- The README says ManimML is under development, features may change, and documentation is limited.
- Some recent features may require installing ManimML from source.
