Mandacaru

Mandacaru is an Android app that runs a lightweight validating Bitcoin node using Floresta and Utreexo’s compact accumulator design. It includes tools for inspecting blocks and transactions, managing peer connections, tracking descriptor-based wallet addresses, and serving wallet connections through Electrum.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Mandacaru when you want a mobile Bitcoin node with node-status, blockchain lookup and wallet-pairing functions, and you accept its default snapshot-based startup trust assumption.

Who it is for

  • Android users who want to run a Bitcoin validating node with reduced storage requirements.
  • Bitcoin users who want on-device access to block, transaction, peer and synchronization information.
  • Wallet users who want to track descriptor-based addresses and connect through an Electrum server.

Documented uses

  • Run a Bitcoin node on an Android phone or compatible x86_64 device.
  • Check synchronization progress, peer connections, uptime and memory use.
  • Look up transactions by transaction ID and broadcast raw transactions.
  • Search blocks by height or hash and inspect chain status and headers.
  • Track addresses from wallet descriptors and configure a wallet to use the built-in Electrum server.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

Requires Android 10 or later, an ARM64 or x86_64 device, and an internet connection. The project documents APK downloads from GitHub Releases and installation through Obtainium. The repository specifies an MIT license.

  • Utreexo reduces storage needs by allowing validation without storing the full UTXO set.
  • assumeutreexo is enabled by default: startup trusts a bundled accumulator snapshot, then validates forward from that height.
  • A from-genesis initial block download without assumeutreexo is not currently exposed in the UI.
  • Supported networks listed in the README are Mainnet, Testnet, Testnet4, Signet and Regtest.
  • The built-in Electrum server and descriptor tracking provide a documented wallet connection path.

Source-based practical guide

Install Mandacaru from its GitHub release

Install the Android app using the documented APK release route.

Before you start

  • Android 10 (API 29) or higher
  • ARM64 (arm64-v8a) or x86_64 device
  • Internet connection

Steps

  1. Open the Mandacaru GitHub Releases page.

  2. Download the APK release.

  3. Install the APK on the compatible Android device.

Expected outcome

Mandacaru is installed and can be launched on the device.

Guide limitations

  • The APK does not support 32-bit x86 or armeabi-v7a devices.
  • The default assumeutreexo mode trusts a bundled accumulator snapshot for pre-snapshot history.
Source-based practical guide

Pair a wallet with Mandacaru’s Electrum server

Set up descriptor tracking and configure a wallet to use Mandacaru’s Electrum server.

Before you start

  • Mandacaru installed on a supported Android device
  • A wallet that can be configured to use an Electrum server

Steps

  1. Launch Mandacaru and enable notifications when prompted.

  2. In Settings > Descriptors, add a wallet descriptor to track its addresses.

  3. Copy the Electrum server address from Settings.

  4. Configure the wallet to use that address as its Electrum server.

Expected outcome

Mandacaru tracks addresses from the added descriptor, and the wallet is configured to connect through the app’s Electrum server.

Guide limitations

  • The instructions require a wallet that supports Electrum server configuration.
