Lux

Lux is an open-source Elixir framework for building multi-agent systems and orchestrating AI-driven workflows. It combines agents with Beams for workflow coordination, Signals for structured communication, Prisms for modular tasks and Lenses for external-service integration.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Lux when building an application framework for agent collaboration and workflow orchestration, rather than seeking a ready-made agent app.

Who it is for

  • Developers building software in which multiple agents collaborate or delegate work.
  • Teams prototyping agent-coordinated workflows such as research or content creation.

Documented uses

  • Coordinate multiple agents across a workflow.
  • Define structured, schema-validated communication between agents.
  • Organize agent tasks into modular functional components.
  • Connect workflows with external services through Lenses.

Requirements & limits

The public repository identifies Lux as open source and licensed under MIT.

  • Elixir is the repository's primary language; the README also describes Python, JavaScript/TypeScript and language-agnostic integration.
  • The README labels built-in agent reflection as coming soon.
  • The repository lists research, content-creation and crypto-trading systems as examples.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Lux development in GitHub Codespaces

Create a Lux Codespace and initialize its documented development environment.

Before you start

  • Access to the Lux GitHub repository and GitHub Codespaces.
  • For the Cursor route, GitHub CLI installed and authenticated.

Steps

  1. In the repository, select Code, then Create codespace on main, and wait for the environment to be created.

  2. Wait for automatic tool installation when the workspace opens.

  3. In VS Code, run Tasks: Run Build Task (or use Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + B) to run Initialize Environment and install the documented dependencies and tools.

  4. To launch the development services, run Tasks: Run Task and choose Start All Services.

Expected outcome

The Codespace development environment is initialized, and the documented task starts LuxApp and Livebook; the README lists them at ports 4000 and 4001, respectively.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents a development Codespace setup, not production deployment.
  • The README says Livebook is available at port 4001 with no authentication required in the described environment.
  • The Cursor setup requires running the provided SSH setup script and connecting to the Codespace; those steps are not included in this VS Code-focused recipe.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for Agent orchestration

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
