Practical overview
When it fits
Use Lorax when you need to operate a shared inference server for a base model and multiple LoRA fine-tunes, with adapter selection handled per request.
Who it is for
- Infrastructure teams serving multiple fine-tuned language-model variants.
- Developers building an inference endpoint that routes requests to LoRA adapters.
- Operators deploying model-serving infrastructure with Docker or Kubernetes.
Documented uses
- Serve a base language model with task-specific adapter weights.
- Select and load a LoRA adapter for an inference request.
- Batch requests using different adapters together.
- Expose model inference through REST, Python client, or OpenAI-compatible chat APIs.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented setup uses Linux, Nvidia GPU hardware, compatible CUDA drivers, Docker, and Nvidia Container Toolkit.
- GPU requirements are specific: the documented minimum is an Nvidia Ampere-generation GPU or newer.
- The project separates pretrained base-model weights from task-specific adapter weights; confirm that the desired architecture and adapter format are supported.
- The repository lists REST, Python client, and OpenAI-compatible chat interfaces.
- Prebuilt Docker images, Helm charts, Prometheus metrics, distributed tracing, and token streaming are listed project capabilities.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Launch the Docker server
Start a Lorax server with the documented Mistral base model.
Before you start
- Linux
- Nvidia Ampere-generation GPU or newer
- CUDA 11.8-compatible device drivers or later
- Docker and Nvidia Container Toolkit
Steps
Install Nvidia Container Toolkit.
Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadandsudo systemctl restart docker.Set the documented model identifier to
mistralai/Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.1and run the provided Docker command, exposing port 8080 and mounting a local data directory.
Expected outcome
A Lorax server is launched with the specified base model using the repository's Docker example.
Guide limitations
- The guide requires Nvidia GPU infrastructure and Linux.
- The example documents server launch, not a successful deployment test or production configuration.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lorax | Serve a base language model with task-specific adapter weights. | Docker, Linux, Self-hosted, Server | The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented setup uses Linux, Nvidia GPU hardware, compatible CUDA drivers, Docker, and Nvidia Container Toolkit. |
| Morphingdb | Import a libtorch model and create predictions from values in a PostgreSQL table. | Docker, Linux, Self-hosted, Server | The README documents a Docker image and a build-from-repository option, followed by connecting to PostgreSQL and enabling the pgdl extension. |
| Gateway — pyadav | Send chat-completion requests to a provider through a common server endpoint. | Server | The repository is public and identifies the project as Apache-2.0 licensed. README installation instructions include binaries, platform package managers and Docker. |
