Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a readable Python starting point for learning or prototyping document RAG, and can configure a model backend and manage the local environment.
Who it is for
- Developers learning how document retrieval and answer generation fit together in a RAG pipeline.
- Builders prototyping document question-answering for research papers or internal documents.
- Developers seeking modular retrieval and reranking components to adapt in a custom RAG application.
Documented uses
- Inspect the stages from document parsing and chunking through embeddings, retrieval, reranking and answer generation.
- Ask questions against processed documents through a web interface or REST API.
- Compare or adapt dense FAISS retrieval and BM25 keyword retrieval in a hybrid pipeline.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. Its documented quick start uses Python 3.10 or later and requires configuring at least one model backend.
- Available model choices include local Ollama and configured hosted model providers; using hosted models can send relevant queries to third parties.
- The in-memory index must be rebuilt after restart, so persistent knowledge-base use requires additional implementation.
- PDF handling extracts the text layer rather than providing general-purpose OCR.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the local project and choose a model backend
Prepare the Python environment and configure one supported model backend.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- A model backend: SiliconFlow credentials, an OpenAI-compatible provider configuration, or Ollama with the model named in the environment file
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Create and activate a Python virtual environment, then install dependencies from requirements.txt.
Copy example.env to .env and configure at least one backend: set SILICONFLOW_API_KEY, configure MAGICK_API_KEY together with its endpoint and model name, or start Ollama and pull the configured model.
Expected outcome
A configured local project environment ready for starting its Gradio interface or FastAPI service.
Guide limitations
- This setup guidance does not establish successful execution on a particular system.
- Values beginning with Your_ are placeholders, not valid credentials.
- The project is intended for learning and experimentation rather than production deployment.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
