Practical overview
When it fits
Use LiteCoder when you want an API-backed coding agent in a repository's terminal and value persistent work context, project memory, permission-checked tool use or delegated agent workflows.
Who it is for
- Developers who want an AI coding workflow inside a terminal.
- Teams coordinating repository tasks through delegated agents, background tools or isolated Git worktrees.
- Developers who want to extend a coding agent with MCP servers, hooks or project and user skills.
Documented uses
- Ask an agent to inspect a repository and summarize its architecture.
- Continue a coding task by resuming a prior session.
- Manage long-running work with context compaction and token-budget tracking.
- Keep project knowledge as readable Markdown memory for use in later turns.
- Delegate development tasks among subagents or teams and inspect persisted task state.
Requirements & limits
Requires Python 3.11 or later and an API key for a supported provider. LiteCoder is available as an MIT-licensed public repository.
- It is a CLI agent, so the documented workflow runs in a terminal rather than a graphical editor.
- Users supply a compatible provider endpoint, model and API key through configuration.
- Session data is stored under
~/.litecoder/; workspace memory is stored in/.memory/as Markdown. - Safe reads can run automatically, while workspace mutations and external side effects are checked by the permission service.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and configure LiteCoder
Prepare the CLI with a supported model provider for use in a repository.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- An API key for a supported provider
- A provider endpoint compatible with Anthropic Messages, OpenAI Chat Completions or OpenAI Responses
Steps
From the LiteCoder repository root, install with the command below.
python -m pip install ".[providers,mcp]"Copy
config.example.tomlto~/.litecoder/config.toml.Configure a provider type, endpoint, model and API key in the TOML file, matching the type to the provider's exposed interface.
Start LiteCoder from the repository you want to work on with
litecoder.
Expected outcome
LiteCoder is installed and configured to connect to a chosen compatible model provider from the target repository.
Guide limitations
- An API key is required.
- The guide covers setup; it does not establish that any particular provider endpoint or model will work for a given user.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litecoder | Ask an agent to inspect a repository and summarize its architecture. | CLI | Requires Python 3.11 or later and an API key for a supported provider. LiteCoder is available as an MIT-licensed public repository. |
| Llmcode | Inspect a project's directory structure with `/tree`. | CLI | The documented setup requires an API key and supports an API base URL and model setting. The project is open source under Apache-2.0. |
| Klaat Code | Open a project directory for terminal-based coding assistance. | CLI, Server | The README provides a global npm installation command and documents browser sign-in with a KlaatAI account. It also identifies the repository as open source under Apache 2.0. |
