Practical overview

When it fits

Use Ktrain when you want a Python library with task-oriented model workflows and are prepared to manage the backend and any task-specific dependencies. Check its installation notes against your TensorFlow version before importing it.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building or training neural networks.
  • Practitioners applying pretrained models to text, vision, graph or tabular data.
  • Learners using documented tutorials, examples and API documentation to explore deep-learning workflows.

Documented uses

  • Build, train and deploy neural networks with a higher-level Python interface.
  • Apply text models to tasks such as classification, named-entity recognition, topic modelling and extractive question answering.
  • Explore machine-learning workflows for vision, graph and tabular data.
  • Use selected pretrained PyTorch or scikit-learn models without installing TensorFlow, where the feature supports them.

Requirements & limits

The public GitHub repository identifies the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

  • Neural-network training requires TensorFlow; TensorFlow is optional for some pretrained PyTorch and scikit-learn workflows.
  • TensorFlow 2.16 or later requires tf_keras and TF_USE_LEGACY_KERAS to be set before importing Ktrain, according to the README.
  • The README specifies legacy optimizers for TensorFlow 2.11 and later.
  • Some task modules require additional libraries, so dependencies vary by use case.
  • Generative question answering was removed from ktrain.text.qa.generative_qa in version 0.41.x; the README points to the separate OnPrem package for that task.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Ktrain for a Linux or cloud environment

Prepare a basic Ktrain installation for a Linux system or cloud environment.

Before you start

  • Python environment with pip
  • TensorFlow 2 for neural-network training

Steps

  1. Update pip with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install -U pip
  2. Install TensorFlow 2 if it is not already installed.

  3. Install Ktrain with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install ktrain
  4. For TensorFlow 2.16 or later, install tf_keras and set TF_USE_LEGACY_KERAS to true before importing Ktrain.

Expected outcome

Ktrain and the documented base dependency are installed; the extra legacy-Keras setup is included where required for TensorFlow 2.16 or later.

Guide limitations

  • The README says some operations require additional libraries.
  • Windows users are directed to separate installation instructions.
  • This covers installation only, not running a model workflow.
