Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Kiso when an agent's session state needs to survive process interruption, when approvals and tool results need to persist, or when you want a terminal coding agent with configurable approval modes.

Who it is for

  • Developers embedding an agent runtime in an existing program
  • People using a terminal coding agent for file and shell tasks
  • Teams designing agent workflows that need resumable sessions and approval checkpoints

Documented uses

  • Embed durable agent sessions in an application through the SDK
  • Resume committed work after a crash or closed terminal
  • Pause for human approval and continue a session later
  • Use a terminal agent to read, search, write, edit, and run shell commands

Requirements & limits

The terminal installation instructions require Node 22 or later on macOS or Linux. The project is MIT licensed.

  • The runtime persists approvals and tool results and resumes from the durable committed portion of a session.
  • Kiso distinguishes between embedded SDK use and its terminal coding agent.
  • The terminal agent supports Anthropic, DeepSeek, OpenAI, ChatGPT sign-in, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints or gateways.
  • Writes and shell actions request approval by default; the terminal agent provides multiple approval modes.

Source-based practical guide

Install and connect the Kiso terminal agent

Install the terminal coding agent and connect it to a model provider.

Before you start

  • Node 22 or later
  • macOS or Linux
  • A supported model sign-in, subscription, API key, or compatible endpoint for model use

Steps

  1. Install with the command below, or use the command below without a global install.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @vincemakes/kiso-code
    Documented command
    npx @vincemakes/kiso-code
  2. Start the agent with kiso when installed globally.

  3. Connect a provider with kiso login and the provider name, or use the documented endpoint login option for a gateway.

Expected outcome

The terminal agent is installed and connected to a model for coding-agent sessions.

Guide limitations

  • The installation instructions specify macOS or Linux and Node 22 or later.
  • The first run can show a scripted demo without a model key; connecting a model is a separate step.
