Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an MCP-compatible AI client needs tools to inspect or operate a jailbroken iPhone during app testing or debugging.
Who it is for
- iOS developers debugging apps and device behavior.
- Testers automating interface checks and repeatable interactions.
- Accessibility-oriented developers inspecting UI elements and screen text.
Documented uses
- Inspect screen contents through screenshots, UI trees, element queries, or OCR.
- Interact with apps using touch gestures, text entry, and hardware-button controls.
- Manage apps and review device information, system logs, and crash logs.
Requirements & limits
Requires a jailbroken iPhone. The README lists rootful support for iOS 13–18 and rootless and roothide support for iOS 15–18. The project's own code is MIT-licensed.
- The target device must be jailbroken and use a listed jailbreak type and iOS range.
- The MCP server has no built-in authentication; its README recommends limiting use to a trusted local network.
- The toolset includes shell and file operations, so the available device access is broader than screen automation alone.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the iOS MCP server for an AI client
Install the server on a supported jailbroken iPhone and prepare its client connection.
Before you start
- A jailbroken iPhone.
- A jailbreak and iOS version listed as supported in the README.
- For manual package installation, mobilesubstrate/ElleKit and preferenceloader.
Steps
Choose the package matching the device's jailbreak type and architecture, or install iOS MCP through Cydia or Sileo.
If installing manually, account for the listed dependencies.
Restart SpringBoard and check the documented health URL at the device IP on port 8090.
In iOS MCP settings, start the service and copy the MCP prompt snippet for the AI client.
Expected outcome
The device-side service is started and the client has the connection prompt snippet.
Guide limitations
- This setup guide does not cover a specific client configuration beyond providing the copied prompt snippet.
- The server has no built-in authentication; the README recommends use only on a trusted local network.
