Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a supported AI client needs to inspect or make changes to a Figma design through the Figma Desktop plugin.

Who it is for

  • UX/UI teams automating repetitive design changes or reviewing design structure.
  • Developers generating interface components and working with design tokens from Figma designs.
  • Users of the listed AI clients who want agent-assisted access to Figma files.

Documented uses

  • Read document information, selections and styles, and scan text or components.
  • Analyze visual hierarchy and identify contrast issues.
  • Apply bulk color, typography or spacing updates across a design document.
  • Export assets or generate code components from designs.

Requirements & limits

The README says the MCP works with any Figma account, including free accounts. Setup requires Figma Desktop, Node.js and a supported AI client.

  • The workflow requires both the MCP websocket server and a development plugin imported into Figma Desktop.
  • The README provides specific setup instructions for Claude Desktop and Cursor and directs users of other listed clients to the installation guide.
  • Parallel agents can process requests through a command queue, but structural changes must explicitly specify parentId; set_current_page is blocked in this mode.
  • The repository is TypeScript and MIT-licensed.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the MCP connection with Figma Desktop and Cursor

Start the websocket, import the Figma plugin and connect Cursor to a Figma channel.

Before you start

  • Node.js
  • Figma Desktop
  • Cursor

Steps

  1. Run the command below in a terminal to install and start the websocket server.

    Documented command
    npx claude-talk-to-figma-mcp
  2. In Figma Desktop, import src/claude_mcp_plugin/manifest.json through Menu → Plugins → Development → Import plugin from manifest.

  3. In Cursor Settings → Tools & Integrations, create an MCP server and add the documented claude-talk-to-figma-mcp-server configuration to mcp.json; save and restart Cursor.

  4. Open the plugin in Figma, copy its channel ID and ask the Cursor agent to connect using Connect to Figma, channel {your-ID}.

Expected outcome

Cursor is connected to the Figma plugin through the MCP server and can use its read and modify tools.

Guide limitations

  • The setup instructions require Figma Desktop and an AI client.
  • For parallel agents making structural changes, commands must specify the intended parentId; set_current_page is blocked.
