Hyper Rag

Hyper Rag is an open-source Python framework for retrieval-augmented generation that models domain-specific knowledge as hypergraphs, retrieves relevant information, and passes it with a question to a large language model to generate a response.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Hyper Rag when you are building or studying a Python RAG pipeline and want to model relationships among multiple entities together, rather than relying only on pairwise graph links.

Who it is for

  • Developers building RAG workflows that need to represent higher-order relationships in domain-specific knowledge.
  • Researchers comparing hypergraph-based retrieval approaches or reproducing the repository’s evaluation workflow.
  • Teams exploring a lightweight variant or a web interface for hypergraph visualization and question answering.

Documented uses

  • Represent relationships across domain-specific corpus data as knowledge hypergraphs.
  • Build retrieval data and retrieve relevant context for questions sent to an LLM.
  • Generate answers from retrieved knowledge and inspect the resulting question/response outputs.
  • Compare the documented Hyper-RAG and Hyper-RAG-Lite modes or run the repository’s evaluation scripts.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies its license as Apache-2.0. The documented quick start requires configuring LLM and embedding endpoint credentials.

  • The retrieval method uses hypergraphs to capture beyond-pairwise relationships and uses Hypergraph-DB as its stated database foundation.
  • The documented pipeline separates corpus preparation, hypergraph/vector data construction, question extraction, and response generation.
  • A quick start requires both LLM and embedding endpoint configuration; the example lists model identifiers but does not make a hosted endpoint part of the framework.
  • The repository describes Hyper-RAG-Lite as a lightweight variant and offers a web UI for visualization and QA.
  • Published performance figures are project-reported experimental results and may not predict results on a reader’s data.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Hyper Rag and configure its model endpoints

Prepare the repository and configure the LLM and embedding settings for the documented quick start.

Before you start

  • Python environment with pip
  • LLM endpoint URL and API key
  • Embedding endpoint URL and API key

Steps

  1. Clone https://github.com/iMoonLab/Hyper-RAG and change into the Hyper-RAG directory.

  2. Install the listed dependencies with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install -r requirements.txt
  3. Copy config_temp.py to my_config.py in the repository root and set the LLM and embedding URLs, keys, model names, and embedding dimension.

Expected outcome

The repository is installed and its configuration file contains the model endpoint settings required for the quick-start example.

Guide limitations

  • Installation and configuration instructions do not by themselves establish that a particular environment or endpoint will work.

Run the documented dataset response workflow

Use the repository’s staged scripts to prepare a dataset, build retrieval data, extract questions, and generate responses.

Before you start

  • Hyper Rag repository and its installed dependencies
  • A dataset placed in the repository root, obtained from one of the documented download locations
  • LLM and embedding endpoint settings in my_config.py

Steps

  1. Run the command below to preprocess the dataset.

    Documented command
    python reproduce/Step_0.py
  2. Run the command below to build knowledge hypergraphs and entity/relation vector data.

    Documented command
    python reproduce/Step_1.py
  3. Run the command below to extract questions.

    Documented command
    python reproduce/Step_2_extract_question.py
  4. Run the command below to generate responses; set the mode to hyper or hyper-lite to choose the documented variant.

    Documented command
    python reproduce/Step_3_response_question.py

Expected outcome

Questions and responses are saved under `cache/{{data_name}}/questions` and `cache/{{data_name}}/response` respectively.

Guide limitations

  • The README’s dataset instructions refer to downloadable data and do not provide a general recipe for adapting arbitrary corpora.
  • The resulting answer quality depends on the selected corpus, models, and configuration.
