Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to develop and self-host automated crypto trading workflows across supported centralized or decentralized exchanges, with documented paper-trading and live API-key connection paths.
Who it is for
- Developers building Python-based trading strategies
- Algorithmic traders seeking self-hosted crypto bot infrastructure
- Users who need paper-trading or exchange-connected workflows
Documented uses
- Create automated cryptocurrency trading bots
- Build algorithmic trading, arbitrage or market-making strategies
- Backtest cryptocurrency trading strategies
- Start, monitor and stop bots through the hbot CLI
- Run strategies from source or with Docker Compose
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and the code is available under the Apache-2.0 open-source license. Documented setup is available from source or through Docker Compose.
- Choose the CLI workflow if you need scriptable bot control and status output.
- Choose the Docker route if you prefer a container-based deployment.
- Use paper trading first when you want to simulate the documented simple_pmm workflow without exchange API keys.
- Live trading requires connecting exchange API keys, which are stored in an encrypted keystore.
- The documented CLI workflow runs one bot per installation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Hummingbot and run a paper-trading bot
Set up the hbot CLI and start the documented simple_pmm paper-trading example.
Before you start
- A cloned Hummingbot repository
- Anaconda or Miniconda
- Docker Compose instead of Conda if using the documented container route
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
Run make install, activate the hummingbot Conda environment, and check the CLI with hbot --help.
Create the simple_pmm configuration with the binance_paper_trade connector and BTC-USDT pair.
Start the configuration, inspect its status, and stop it gracefully with the documented hbot commands.
Expected outcome
A simple_pmm bot runs in paper-trading mode against live Binance market data without exchange API keys.
Guide limitations
- The documented CLI workflow runs one bot per installation.
- This is simulated trading, not live execution.
- The repository points to the full installation and CLI documentation for troubleshooting and the complete command reference.
