Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a code-based sequence of Huff exercises and can work in a local command-line environment with the Huff compiler and Foundry.

Who it is for

  • Developers learning Huff and EVM bytecode through hands-on coding.
  • Solidity learners who want practice with low-level contract behavior and test-driven exercises.

Documented uses

  • Practice writing Huff macros and reasoning about EVM operations.
  • Use tests to check an exercise implementation.
  • Work through topics such as calldata, memory, arithmetic, reverts, arrays and contract interactions.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and open source under GPL-3.0. The README describes local command-line prerequisites: the Huff compiler and Foundry.

  • This is a repository-based exercise set, not a browser lesson interface.
  • The README suggests an order for exercises and names the test associated with its introductory Return1 example.
  • Huff compilation and Foundry testing are separate parts of the documented workflow.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Complete and test the Return1 exercise

Edit the introductory Huff macro and run its corresponding Foundry test.

Before you start

  • Huff compiler installed and available as huffc
  • Foundry installed with forge available
  • Project dependencies installed with forge install

Steps

  1. Open src/Return1.huff in the repository.

  2. Edit the MAIN macro to store 1 in memory at offset 0 and return 32 bytes from offset 0, following the README example.

  3. Run forge test -vvv --mc Return1Test.

Expected outcome

The matching test reports whether the Return1 implementation passes.

Guide limitations

  • The guide covers this example exercise only; the repository lists additional exercises separately.
  • The commands and expected test output are from the project README, not execution verification.
