Practical overview
When it fits
Use Heym when you need to build and operate agentic workflows on your own infrastructure, especially when run visibility, evaluation, retries, or human approval checkpoints are part of the operating process.
Who it is for
- Teams building agentic systems that need to combine agents with deterministic process steps.
- Operators who want to inspect workflow runs, evaluate model responses, and add human review checkpoints.
- Developers seeking a self-hosted runtime that can expose workflows through REST, SSE, MCP, or Portal interfaces.
Documented uses
- Visually compose or AI-generate agent and deterministic workflows.
- Coordinate dependent or parallel workflow steps, tools, and sub-workflows.
- Run workflows from APIs, schedules, event triggers, MCP clients, and interactive interfaces.
- Inspect execution history, traces, errors, latency, token use, and model costs.
- Compare prompts and model responses against test cases and expected outputs.
Requirements & limits
The repository provides a local startup script and Docker Compose deployment instructions. Local setup requires Bun, Python 3.11+, UV, and Docker. The repository is public and includes source code for local setup.
- PostgreSQL is the core database; the standard Compose setup includes PostgreSQL, backend, and frontend.
- The documented local setup starts the services with ./run.sh and serves the interface at localhost:4017.
- The canvas is a build and inspection interface, while the runtime also supports APIs, schedules, event triggers, MCP clients, and Portal conversations.
- RabbitMQ and Redis are optional integrations for workflows that need them; retrieval-augmented generation can use PostgreSQL/pgvector or external Qdrant.
- Execution controls include retries, error paths, and checkpoints for human review.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start Heym locally
Launch a local Heym instance and reach its account creation page.
Before you start
- Bun
- Python 3.11 or later
- UV
- Docker
Steps
Clone the Heym repository and change into its directory.
Run ./run.sh; the script starts PostgreSQL, the backend, and the frontend.
Open http://localhost:4017 to create an account and start building.
Expected outcome
A local Heym instance is available at the documented address for account creation and workflow building.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers local startup and account creation, not deploying or executing a workflow.
- The repository's local setup requires Bun, Python 3.11+, UV, and Docker.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heym | Visually compose or AI-generate agent and deterministic workflows. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository provides a local startup script and Docker Compose deployment instructions. Local setup requires Bun, Python 3.11+, UV, and Docker. The repository is public and includes source code for local setup. |
| Agenite | Define typed tools with JSON Schema validation and error handling. | CLI | |
| Veldra | Create an agent with a policy, tools, skills, knowledge base and reasoning method. | Self-hosted | The documented deployment is self-hosted and uses a sign-in gate after a first-run administrator account is created. |
