Practical overview
When it fits
Consider Hephaestus when a project’s next steps may depend on what agents discover while working, and a fixed sequence of predefined tasks would be too rigid.
Who it is for
- Developers building agentic applications for complex, evolving tasks.
- Teams exploring workflows that need to respond to discoveries during execution.
- Software developers considering the separate Hephaestus Dev setup and its listed development workflows.
Documented uses
- Create phase-based workflows where agents can add tasks beyond the initial plan.
- Turn findings during validation into investigation, implementation or retest work.
- Use the Hephaestus Dev workflow set for tasks such as bug fixing, feature development or documentation generation.
Requirements & limits
The project is presented as a Python repository, and its README identifies the license as AGPL-3.0. The README labels the project alpha.
- The framework’s defining behavior is dynamic task creation across logical phases, rather than only branching along paths specified in advance.
- The documented setup has multiple dependencies: Python 3.10+, terminal and development tools, Docker-backed Qdrant, a supported CLI AI tool and model-provider API keys.
- Hephaestus Dev is presented as a preconfigured development setup with five listed software workflows; it is distinct from the general framework description.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Check the listed setup requirements on macOS
Use the repository’s setup-check script to review whether required tools, configuration and services are present.
Before you start
- macOS
- A local copy of the Hephaestus repository
- Python and the project’s setup-check script
Steps
Install and configure the tools and services listed by the project, including tmux, Git, Docker, Node.js, npm and a supported CLI AI tool.
Place API keys in the .env file and configure MCP servers and the working directory.
Run the command below from the project setup.
python check_setup_macos.py
Expected outcome
The script reports on required CLI tools, API keys, MCP configuration, configuration files, running services, and Python and frontend dependencies.
Guide limitations
- The documented setup-check script is specifically identified for macOS.
- The setup report checks configuration and services; it does not establish that a workflow will complete successfully.
