Practical overview

When it fits

Use Helloagents when building a Python agent application that needs a configurable tool-calling loop, or when you want to add retrieval, memory, MCP tools or subagents as components.

Who it is for

  • Python developers creating model-driven assistants that call registered tools.
  • Developers composing multi-agent applications with subagents and shared context.
  • Builders adding retrieval or persistent memory to an agent workflow.

Documented uses

  • Create a model-to-tool execution loop with SimpleAgent and a registered tool.
  • Connect tools exposed through MCP to agent workflows.
  • Add RAG or GraphRAG retrieval to an agent application.
  • Persist sessions and retrieve semantic memories across interactions.
  • Compose subagents and other configurable components into a multi-agent application.

Requirements & limits

The README recommends 64-bit Python 3.13 and supports Python 3.12. It documents installation through uv or pip.

  • Model configuration requires a model name, API key and base URL; the service must support the relevant message and tool-calling protocol.
  • The framework provides OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic and Gemini adapters and selects an adapter based on the base URL.
  • SimpleAgent does not automatically register Skills, subagents, todo or logging tools, and does not create session or tracing directories by default.
  • Choose the learn_version branch when following the Hello-Agents tutorial; the current version’s documentation and examples track the current source.
  • The README labels the project CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install the project and run its asynchronous agent demo

Set up the repository and launch the included asynchronous agent demo.

Before you start

  • Python 3.12 or 3.13; Python 3.13 is recommended.
  • The repository root and either uv or pip. For pip, create and activate a virtual environment first.

Steps

  1. From the repository root, choose one documented installation route: run the command below, or use pip to install requirements.txt.

    Documented command
    uv sync --locked
  2. Run the demo with the command below for the uv route, or the command below for pip.

    Documented command
    uv run --locked python -X utf8 -m examples.agents.async_agent_demo
    Documented command
    python -X utf8 -m examples.agents.async_agent_demo

Expected outcome

The repository’s asynchronous agent demo is launched.

Guide limitations

  • The README recommends 64-bit Python 3.13 and also supports Python 3.12.
  • This setup path runs the demo; it does not describe configuring a particular model provider.
