Practical overview
When it fits
Use Haystack when you need a developer framework to compose AI models, retrieval components and tools into a configurable agent or application workflow.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI agents that can use tools such as web search.
- Teams creating retrieval-augmented question-answering and search applications.
- Practitioners who want to configure multi-step workflows, agent state or tool behavior.
Documented uses
- Build an agent that can decide whether to call a tool when answering a question.
- Create retrieval-based applications grounded in documents or other indexed content.
- Configure tool outputs and agent state so retrieved information can be used in later reasoning steps.
- Inspect streamed responses and tool activity while developing an agent workflow.
Requirements & limits
The project is labeled open-source. The documented quick start installs the Python package with pip.
- The framework requires developers to select and configure model providers, tools and credentials for their application.
- The quick-start web-search example needs both a model-provider credential and a SerperDev API key.
- Tutorials cover different levels, from beginner retrieval workflows to advanced agents and multi-agent systems.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a basic Haystack web-search agent
Install Haystack and configure the documented starter example that connects an agent to a model and web-search tool.
Before you start
- Python environment suitable for installing Haystack with pip.
- A credential for the chosen model provider; the example uses OpenAI.
- A SerperDev API key for the web-search component.
Steps
Install Haystack with the command below.
pip install haystack-aiSet the model-provider and SerperDev API keys as environment variables.
Create a SerperDev web-search component and wrap it as an agent tool.
Configure an Agent with a chat generator and the search tool, then provide a user question.
Expected outcome
A configured agent can decide whether to use the web-search tool and return a response to the question.
Guide limitations
- The example depends on credentials for the selected model provider and SerperDev.
- The guide documents a starter configuration, not deployment or production-readiness procedures.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| haystack.deepset.ai | Build an agent that can decide whether to call a tool when answering a question. | The project is labeled open-source. The documented quick start installs the Python package with pip. | |
| Agenite | Define typed tools with JSON Schema validation and error handling. | CLI | |
| Veldra | Create an agent with a policy, tools, skills, knowledge base and reasoning method. | Self-hosted | The documented deployment is self-hosted and uses a sign-in gate after a first-run administrator account is created. |
